I’ve been trying to update my inspo map for like 4 years and every time I think it’s complete I remember more things I should add—even this version I feel still doesn’t represent every single thing I draw inspiration from BUT I’m forcing myself to finally post a version for posterity lol

What I’m influenced by, or have been majorly influenced by in the past, and work I can point to & say “this is the kind of art I want to make” 🖼️

I got inspired by @spicymancer's influence map and wanted to try it.

I mostly seem to like grotesque body horror, organic vs industrial robots, low fantasy character designs with an emphasis on practicality, chunky squeezable cartoons with high stylization, and hot scary women.

I think it's real obvious what art influenced which project I'ved worked on. Jaquim Dos Santos, Jen Zee and Kaoru Mori are basically my ideal humanoid character designers.

A lot of my fantasy art is pretty much different shades of Princess Mononoke. I like outfits that show the fictional culture the characters come from.

A lot of my sci-fi and body horror stuff was influenced by the fact that I played Metroid Fusion way too young. Finding out that it was based on ALIEN and ALIENS made a lot of sense retroactively, two movies I ALSO saw way too young.

Obviously Steven Universe and Pokemon influence most of my sillier softer art.

And lastly... I am bisexual so...

Final note: I am always suprised how much my robots and mechs just look like Invader Zim robots.

This was tricky because pretty much everything I’ve every watched or enjoyed has been some source of inspiration for me, and it is hard to just pick a few. I decided to go with animated shows/movies that I saw before I was an adult to help narrow it down (haha, jokes one me; that didn’t help at all. there simply too many things I love that have impacted me somehow). Everything here either helped me find my own art style or gave me an understanding of stories (mostly both). Some shows sort of contributed to my sense of humor, and everything added to my appreciation of character design~

Some that didn’t get pictured but are still very important to me; Little Nemo Adventures in Slumberland. DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, the Fantastic Adventures of Unico. Recess, Fillmore, the Proud Family, Kim Possible, the Weekenders. The Road to El Dorado, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda. The Iron Giant. Xiao-Lin Showdown. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. KND. El Tigre, Rugrats, Danny Phantom, Fairly Odd Parents. The Simpsons and King of the Hill. Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Incredibles, a Bug’s Life. The Little Mermaid, Brother Bear, Beauty and the Beast, Atlantis: the Lost Empire, the Great Mouse Detective, Robin Hood. Scooby-Doo, the Flintstones, the Jetsons.

I had to put Teen Titans and X-Men: EVOLUTION up because those two shows really helped me find my style, and so was Avatar: the Last Airbender. Batman and the Ninja Turtles have been part of my life since I was a toddler. 

I think everybody has at least one or two Dinsey movies that really stick with them, so I picked 4 of my favorites. I grew up watching Pokemon and Digimon side-by-side, enjoying them both for different reasons, but with the common denominator of kids who have awesome monster buddies. Sailor Moon was probably the first show I ever saw that had girls as the most powerful heroes, they were pretty and kicked-butt at the same time. FMA is one of those shows that really raises the bar, there is no such thing as the “perfect” show, but FMA is dang close. I’ll always adore Hey Arnold, it was so good at mixing emotional stories with humor. The Looney Tunes were something I was watching before I could even talk thanks to my parents, so I was familiar with them by the time I was 3. Gargoyles was more of an experience than a just a show I watched. Daria was so different than anything else I had seen at the time, and not much else has been like it since. Rankin/Bass was responsible for my early exposure to high-fantasy movies like the Last Unicorn and the Flight of Dragons, but I’ll always remember that this was my first introduction to JRR Tolkien. So many Bluth movies have meant a lot to me over the years, but the Secret of NIMH is very special to me. There are several Dreamworks movies that I love, but I had to go with the Prince of Egypt, I still remember how my breath was taken away while watching it in theaters as a child. When I first saw the Powerpuff Girls I loved them instantly and completely. Invader ZIM was such a weird show, and as the years went by I somehow enjoyed it more and more for that wonderful weirdness. Kiki’s Deliver Service was the first Ghibli movie I ever saw, while visiting my cousins, and it is still my favorite. The Nightmare Before Christmas pushed all the right buttons for me as a kid, combining Halloween and Christmas together.

time for another inspiration map! i’m trying to revamp my style and get back to the basic things that influence the way i draw, so here are the modern artists that inspire me the most! (primarily listed tumblr links but most of the artists have links to their twitter, instagram... on their blogs!). i might do a contemporary/baroque/classics list, but those influences mainly play on coloring technique and style!

I have been meaning to make one of these for ages, I wanted to base the size of each inspiration by the impact that its had on my work over the years, not just in terms of my works aesthetic but also my works writing and tone as well. Lots of things didn’t make it but I think these are by far and away the ones that have had the biggest impact on my work over the years.
