I and others have had our suspicions, but I think this indirectly pretty much confirms it: Instagram shadowbans you for paying for ads in order to make you keep paying. When I first paid for ads, my overall performance plummeted. It's so bad even popular fanart hardly reaches 50 people anymore.

So the other day, I was considering another ad to promote my booth at the upcoming Berlin book fair (Sept 27-28), and just for fun, cranked it all the way up.

Look at this. A year's salary for a few million views that aren't even guaranteed. You're paying them a Porsche in exchange for being thrown a bone. Big artists like Yeougui or Samdoesarts reach these numbers naturally. Yes, they're big, but put in perspective, they're not big enough for such views to be worth 25k!!

This isn't even a good deal. When I drew fanart of an actor and he shared it in his story for 12 hours, this drove 60,000 views to the picture. Out of his 1.2 million followers, I think that's decent traffic given it comes from a story, but just like my paid ads, that did not help my overall account. Except with ads, instead of staying the same, the overall account performance DROPS SHARPLY.

In short, buying ads will throw you into a vicious cycle of having to buy ads forever because they're basically heroin - you weren't doing great to begin with, but now you depend on it to breathe until you're bankrupt and burnt out. Fuck you @instagram
