Old Hawai‘i handled lawbreaking very differently, if you broke kānāwai (law), how they enforced the social order. Which could be as simple as catching the wrong fish out of season. The sentence was death. If you were fast or given a head start you may have made the frantic run across the sharp lava to a "place of refuge". if you made it before anyone killed you. You could look forward to a existence of looking over your shoulder and a prison with no walls, at the place of refuge the rest of your life. Anyone had permission to kill you if you left the refuge by even a step. This is the traditional punishment.
Sometimes its a little tempting to bring back traditional ways.
