TL;DR Version: The Crystal Ball Frappuccino from @Starbucks tastes like peaches & cream and it’s wonderful. Full Review: I’ll level with you, my first thought when I saw there was a new Frappuccino at Starbucks was, “Crap. I’m gonna have to get this.” As I’ve made strides to get in better shape, part of the movement has involved cutting the Frappuccinos out of my daily Starbucks visits. Today I wasn’t even going to get my usual macchiato, but the sign over the counter made it clear people would be asking me about the “Crystal Ball Frappuccino” and this was going to be a fat day. I apologized to the barista behind the counter (they hate making Frappuccinos) as I ordered a grande. I hadn’t bothered asking what was in it and from the picture it looked white with green streaks and sprinkles on top. I later learned there are three color options and the color of the sprinkles you get is up to the barista. Based on the photo, I was expecting some sort of vanilla bean and matcha or sour apple flavor. I braced myself for what I expected to be a hideous taste, took a sip, and couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed it. Instead of some tart nonsense or something that tastes like cotton candy covered in raw sugar, this had a tropical flavor I couldn’t place. The earlier, “Crap. I’m gonna have to get this” had turned into, “Oh, crap. I actually really like this.” I asked the barista what kind of syrup was in it and she said, “mocha.” I chuckled and asked, “What *else* is in it?” At that point the other barista chimed in and explained that it also had peach syrup and peach flavored whipped cream. When I said I loved it they both laughed and congratulated me for being the first person all day who did. It’s possible I’m the one with broken taste buds, but I can’t imagine not liking this. I didn’t pick up on the mocha elements, but I might not have the refined palate to taste those notes. TL;DR Version: The Frosted Sunrise from @Chickfila isn’t as good as their Frosted Lemonade or any of their other desserts. Full Review: Last night I went to Chick-fil-a so I could answer a reader’s question of whether the Oreo Shake from @BurgerKing was better than the Cookies & Cream Shake from Chick-fil-a. While that isn’t the topic of this review, I will go ahead and say that I like the taste and consistency of the Oreo Shake better, but the Cookies & Cream Shake is very good in its own right and a “small” comes in at only 590 calories (compared to 720 calories for the Oreo Shake). When I pulled up I saw an ad for Chick-fil-a’s new “Frosted Sunrise” drink. Internet research during my 20 minute wait in the drive thru revealed that it’s a mixture of vanilla ice cream and “Simply Orange” orange juice. I was a big fan of their Frosted Lemonade (same premise, except ice cream and lemonade) so I decided to give this a try even though the meal without it was already gonna wreck my calorie count for the day. Never doubt that I love my readers more than I respect myself. Unfortunately, the Frosted Sunrise was not worth the (admittedly limited) impact on my diet. A small Frosted Sunrise comes in at 320 calories and 60g of carbs, compared to the Frosted Lemonade which comes in at 330 calories and 65g of carbs. I’m no scientist, so I can’t tell you why vanilla ice cream and orange juice doesn’t work when vanilla ice cream and lemonade does. Maybe it’s the fact that lemonade already contains so much sugar so it masks the acidity? In any event, the Frosted Sunrise kind of reminded me of the taste when you drink orange juice right after brushing your teeth. It wasn’t quite that bad, but it wasn’t sweet like the Frosted Lemonade and definitely didn’t have the orange creamsicle taste I expected. TL;DR Version: The Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich from @BurgerKing is a smaller unhealthier version of the @Wendys Spicy Chicken Sandwich. You’re better off going to Wendy’s (or @Chickfila if you want something that’s actually spicy). Full Review: Technically, Burger King had already entered the spicy chicken sandwich game with their recent Crispy Buffalo Chicken Melt, Spicy Chicken Jr., and Spicy Original Chicken Sandwich. The difference is that the new Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich isn’t reliant upon sauce for its heat like those other sandwiches. The Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich is a fried chicken breast with spicy seasoned breading, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a potato bun. As with Burger King’s other crispy chicken sandwiches, this one is small relative to most other fast food entrees. It also isn’t particularly spicy. It actually tastes quite a bit like the Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich, which isn’t all that surprising considering the identical ingredients. There’s nothing wrong with tasting just like Wendy’s (even if it should properly be called the “mild” chicken sandwich). Unfortunately for Burger King, their version is smaller despite managing to pack in another 190 calories and twice the fat. If you want a mild chicken sandwich, go to Wendy’s. If you want a spicy chicken sandwich, go to Chick-fil-a. TL;DR Version: The Nole Dog is hands down the best thing I’ve eaten at the ballpark in this or any other season and the fact that it’s somehow cheaper than all the new premium options is mystifying. Full Review: My original plan was to take a night off from #EatForTheCycle because of how unimpressive everything has been so far. But hunger and curiosity got the best of me in between innings and I decided to check out the concession stand on the concourse for a change of pace. On the menu, along with the traditional fare, was something heretofore unseen: the “Nole Dog.” Described as a footlong jumbo hotdog covered with pulled pork, cheesesteak , and onions, at only $8 it is somehow cheaper than all of the terrible food I’ve eaten so far this season. Luckily they still had one footlong hotdog left, but the lady behind the counter told me she was out of pulled pork. I thought I was going to have to pull the ripcord on this order, but then she asked, “Would be okay to use brisket instead.” Are you being serious right now? That’s like showing up for your Tinder date and discovering the person you’re meeting is better looking than their photos. On the way back to my seat I grabbed a fork and applied a layer of BBQ sauce with a light touch of Tabasco. Everyone around me was fascinated with my order and for the first time I had effusive praise. The brisket was fantastic. I had to eat it with the fork because it was pouring off the dog, but every bite was moist and delicious. The hot dog wasn’t as good as the brisket, but it wasn’t bad and I’m sure it would’ve been better in the early innings when it was fresh. I was also glad to see the cheese was shredded and not the liquid cheese sauce that comes with nachos. I can’t vouch for how this would’ve tasted with the pulled pork, but it’s definitely worth asking them to upgrade you to the brisket and see if it works.
