in the case of the former, he is incredibly motivated by the professor’s work ethic ( always give it 110%, live for the rewards, && be so grateful for the opportunity that trivial “ downsides “ don’t at all matter ), his holistic nature, && his equal treatment of all staff && all pokemon.
as for the latter… well, that one’s a bit of a given. horrible things happen in the world every single day, minor && major, && so everyone carries around negative emotions, thoughts, && memories with them everywhere they go, regardless of how hard they try to rid themselves of them && leave them in the past. he’s only one man, only capable of so much, but spark has always been one to seek to help others shoulder their burdens, survive their downfalls, && find the good in the world that can seem so non - existent so much of the time. he has such strong protective instincts, is so selfless… it means so much to him that he would move mountains in order to make someone smile for even a millisecond && he will never consider his efforts to be wasted or for nought. he truly does just want to help.
