Joshua had not expected the invitation. As far as he was aware, no one was privy to his abilities (or his address, for that matter) aside from him. And he had certainly never made the acquaintance of any Charles Xavier. He would have likely disregarded the whole thing had it not been for Natasha. There was still a lot about her past that neither of them could piece together, her real name being one. If this strange man knew of his gifts then perhaps he knew other things, too.
The resurrection had not been without flaws. Many days and nights were spent trying to perfect his “work”, to assure that she was as human as she’d been when she was alive... the first time around. It was tedious. Needless to say, he and Natasha did not get out much. On top of the very real possibility that her organs would collapse on her, he was also afraid that someone from her past life would come to recognize her on the street. One of the men who hurt her. But he considers this soiree to be a well-calculated risk, one he was more than willing to take. He just wanted to see her happy.
He shelled out the money for a nice gown, having recruited his friend and business partner -- a terribly generous term for their arrangement. One could hardly classify the illegal exchange of dead bodies as “business.” -- Lucy to do the actual sizing and fitting, for though he was quite knowledgeable on anatomy he knew absolutely nothing of women’s apparel. And Lucy had done a fine job indeed, for Natasha was a vision in emerald. Her dark hair laid soft around her face, pinned-up in a way that was very en vogue. Or so he’d been told. So different was she from the corpse on his table that he often forgot they were ever the same at all.
The mansion was filled with a high tempestuous mingle of voices and the tinkling of a grand piano. A few unfamiliar faces greet them as they proceed down the hall and to the ballroom, the voices and music growing more pronounced as they drew nearer. He places a gentle hand on the small of her back, leaning in just enough for only her to hear. “I’ll be at your side the whole night. There’s nothing to fear.”
