Not My Cup of Friday
As I sit at my desk with my ambient playlist going, typing up this blog post with my green tea nearby and chewing on my granola bar, the event prior to the nine o' clock hour is still fresh in my mind. Typically I would be writing out a suggestion for a book to read this weekend for my followers here on HexxalWrites, on my Facebook page, even on my Tumblr account; however, that usual blog post escapes me for this topic I am about to discuss.
I had gotten off the express bus two blocks away from the street my job was located at and walked the rest of the way with my earphones blasting away one of my favorite rock songs. When I crossed the street, I strode the rest of the way to reach the steps of the building in which I work. I took out my earbuds and shut off my iPod, winding the cord around my musical apparatus so that I can stick it into my coat pocket. I adjusted the strap of my blue lunch tote, the mermaid print facing outward toward the street until I passed it.
From afar, I had thought that someone just dumped a small garbage bag on the sidewalk. When I walked closer, I realized it wasn't a garbage bag. Laying there on the sidewalk was a medium-sized, black leather handbag. Scattered around it was an array of makeup, an envelope, a keyring with keys still on them, and other debris that I likely would have expected any woman to carry in cold weather.
I frowned, worry creeping in my veins. We had moved into the space back in November and I had never seen a purse just laying around. Trash, of course; I've lived and worked in areas where the pavement was often littered with trash growing up. Seeing a purse, surrounded by its contents on the pavement, however; that was new. That was concerning.
I snapped a photo and walked into my office, asking my coworker if she noticed the purse outside of our building. She looked surprised and I showed her the photo, telling her the purse was just there, near our gated parking lot. Her face mirrored mine in concern and she asked if we should call the police. I wasn't sure, but something in my gut told me to call the police. First things first, I was going to see if anyone recognized the purse.
I walked the short distance across the hall to the other business tenants in the building and asked if they knew whose purse was outside. I showed them the photo and neither one recognized it, but one of the workers mentioned that the window was cracked on the door they enter through. That was enough to have my anxiety through the roof. I thanked them, went back to my office, and told my coworker that we were notifying the police.
I spoke to the 911 operator and explained the situation. The purse was just laying there and I was concerned that either it was a theft or a kidnapping. I gave the address to my building and told the operator that I would be standing near the purse when the uniformed officers arrived. I thanked the operator and we both hung up. I grabbed my coat and told my coworker to man the phones until after I spoke to the cops.
I was outside waiting for a few minutes until the white police van came rolling down the street and stopped when they saw me. I usually get very tense around cops as a young woman of color, but I swallowed that tension. One of the cops said that his camera was recording and proceeded to take my statement, while his partner was looking through the purse and the spilled contents for any form of identification. I told the officers that I noticed the purse when I was about to walk into the office and I was concerned that something may have happened with the owner. The officer inspecting the purse said that nothing of value seems to be present (the contents were a lot of makeup, an envelope, and a set of keys) and, going by the name that was on the envelope, whomever may have owned the bag did not report it stolen or missing.
They did say they appreciated me calling it in since there could be another explanation besides a drunken night on the town and tossing an old purse. The chill that gripped me was somewhat put at ease. However, I still feel as though something is wrong, that a purse in a still-decent condition wouldn't be thrown away like that. I may not be a designer handbag buff, but the bag looked far too expensive to be thrown out like that (it may be just my point of view though).
I still have the feeling that something is wrong and something happened to that purse's owner. I just hope my gut feeling is wrong.
Please let everything go smoothly huhuhuhuhuhuhuh
oh man oh man oh man
