Supporting authors is not only compliments. There should be also a constructive criticism that allows author to know the reader's perspective. And learn something new. Develop your writing instead of stuck in a false belief that everything you created is great, because obsessive fans say so.
This, of course, does not mean hateful and mean opinions or forcing decisions so that the story looks like we want. But the flattering itself does not bring anything good either.
Btw. AMR 2 has a new demo on Patreon and it is good. Actually the author made a lot of good changes in the beginning of the game.
(about this post)
I fully agree with you on the need of constructive criticism! I didn't mean to only put compliments out there, authors will always need to know how to improve and hear it from their audience for sure.
The whole post wasn't about delivering flattery. There is a difference between support and flattery as well. What I encourage is positive fandom experience and positive interactions.
There is a difference between being rude and offering constructive criticism, which many tend to forget online and it is important for people to understand that, especially these days. I come from a place where many people would not offer any advice and would simply call works 'awful' without offering how to make it better and how to improve but still call it 'constructive criticism' when, in reality, it's not.
I believe that it is essential for authors to receive constructive criticism and I apologize if my post came off as 'you only need to give authors compliments' because it's not the case.
What I'm talking about is how certain people ask authors for characters to be toned down solely because they're mean to their MCs and they want to always be on the 'good' side. I want people to not come into some author's inbox and demand for the change of genre, for the destruction of character, for sending hateful messages , etc. For example, asking an author to change the whole character just because they're 'mean' when they ARE mean as a character. I want people to have more media literacy and to not try to simplify complicated characters or tone them down, especially when warnings have been given. I'm speaking about people who are
I am also aware that AMR2 has a new demo! I am also one of their Patreons. Super excited with the comeback. :D
My issue was with people who would bombard negative comments that were NOT constructive criticism into the forum here and there to the point it was impossible to look at the forums. There were insults, there were offensive comments, and more. Once again, there is a difference, but many people want to call their rude remarks as 'criticism' when it fact it's not just so they can get away with being a jackass. I agree that author has done amazing rewrite and I'm super glad to see them enjoying their work once again! Hope you're enjoying it as well. We should totally geek out about it if u'd like. :D
For example, people should be more understanding to authors who have a day job and authors who may struggle irl, so they shouldn't continue to daily send them asks about when the update is going to be. They also shouldn't send them hateful/rude messages about less notifications/updates.
My issue is not with constructive criticism because it's essential for improvements and knowing how to get better. My issue is with people who are being rude and hateful but mask it under 'criticism'. It's about wording, it's about structure, and it's about how messages are sent out.
Hope this explains my stance better! :)
but is it not enough that you are a semblance to gladden a heart that flees from the truth?

it’s so funny to me how the interactive fiction community’s favorite love interest trope isn’t, like, brooding rebel or class clown. it’s duty-bound strong-but-silent angsty leader who’s obsessed with honor and protection and emotionally unavailable. like that is so niche but somehow ubiquitous 😭
