CAGE GALLERYでは3年ぶり２度目となる本展は、矢島の新作となる映像作品を発表いたします。矢島はこれまで、自らの都市生活において日常的に感じる環境へのズレや違和感にアプローチする作品を制作してきました。写真の中の風景や人物は、どこか／誰かを知っているようで知らない独特の「距離感」によって、見るものに違和感を生み出します。

本展「Interaction」は、2つの映像が対となるインスタレーションです。二つの窓に収められたディスプレイには、左右で類似する異なったイメージが上映され、ループしながら複数の組み合わせが展開されます。一方のモチーフは動画、もう一方は静止画で構成されており、動きは微細な変化として抑えられているために、一見どちらも静止画に感じるでしょう。矢島はパブリックに開かれた展示空間において、路上を通り過ぎる人と立ち止まり鑑賞する人、両者の間で経験の質感にズレをつくりながら、それを幾重も重ねることで違和感を助長しようとします。「かつてそうだったはず、という認識は『そうだった気がする』『そうではなかったかもしれない』という疑念となり、常に揺らいでいく」と語る矢島の映像は、見ることを徹底して問いかけるために選択された、揺れ動く「写真」と言えるでしょう。
