INTERIM SHOW REFLECTIONS

I was not overly happy with the display of my work within our Interim Show - MAction, and was a little disappointed in my exhibition efforts - I know I can do better than that.

The film looked good displayed on the white panel, but it was so small, therefore not showing the film off as the main element of my work. My corset piece did not have enough of a structure to support itself, and ended up looking very sorry for itself draped over the projector. I had originally wanted to suspend it from the ceiling bars, but in the space we were given, I was unfortunately not allowed to do that, and had to resort to draping - which did not work. The framed picture did help to convey a little more of my character's story, but the black frame did not fit with the rest of the work, and the model's look was too much of a contrast with my piece. Using my samples to portray the infection side of things, did not work, as they were a messy juxtaposition of shapes and colours. My plans just did not come together. There were minor elements I was happy with, but on the whole... it was a bit of a disaster!

Participating in this exhibition has made it clear that I need to focus on my display as an installation. Creating an immersive experience for my audience to become a part of the story, while displaying the film within, will create a more dynamic, memorable curation of my work. I need to ensure that the story is the focus of the exhibition, and that it is that element that is taken away by the audience. As my film work progresses, and the costume pieces are developed I will uncover a clearer picture of exactly what this installation will look like - and how it will fit into the world around it.

I think I needed this bad experience to figure out what I actually want to display... and how I do not want my show to end up - it was certainly a sharp learning curve!

MAction - COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

Display Team

We were split into four groups - Display, Curation, Audience, and Communication - so we could all work on different aspects of the show. I was part of the Display team.

I think we managed to put together a relatively good-looking show with the resources we had, in the limited time we were given, and were able to manoeuvre a difficult space to work to our needs. However, with stronger teamwork, it could have been a lot more effective.

For the final exhibition I hope we can communicate better as a whole group. We also need to access the space well ahead of time, and start planning out ideas from now. I also hope that we will be able work better within a group as a whole, and inter-team communication will be stronger.

The Group As A Whole

Two weeks is not enough time to fully plan an exhibition, especially while everybody is still working on their pieces. Luckily for the final show, the two weeks we have to plan will be more chilled, as we will have all finished our work by then. We will also, hopefully, be discussing ideas well ahead of schedule, and will ensure that planning starts as soon as this final module starts to ensure that we can get the most out of our final show opportunity. Opening night was good fun, but it was a shame we did not get the word out properly, as not many people outside of the university came along. For the final show, I think we should push to market ourselves properly, and get invites going out well ahead of time.

Display Team - needs to get into the space ahead of time, figure out the resources available, what we can do with the space, and work with the curation, and communication teams to ensure our display works for everybody and is cohesive.

Curation Team - needs to sit down with each person individually, and document how we all want our space to look. They then need to make decisions, and ensure they are communicating effectively with everybody to meet the needs of the individuals, as well as the group as a whole.

Communication Team - needs to get us online! Social media for the class is really important, especially when we take our work to Munich. They need to spend time figuring out the branding for our class, and design that into the social media platforms, posters, invitations, catalogues, etc. and collect information from all teams, and individuals to start posting now.

Audience Team - needs to get together a list of people to invite, and work with the communication team to send out invites. They also need to inject a bit of "customer service" into the show opening, organise refreshments, and arrange invigilation of the show.

I was very disheartened after the exhibition, both with my own failed display, and how we worked as a team. However, during our post-show meeting, I felt a lot better about the potential of our final show. We came together a little better, and ideas were flowing with more ease. Communication was still a little broken, but it was a lot better than before, and we were starting to talk about the aspects of putting together an exhibition that are actually important. I am more hopeful that the final exhibition will be a success!

Interim Show Overview

In groups we talked about what we would like to do for the exhibition, we talked about anxieties and fears and how we would relate them to an office space, we also briefly talked about originality and how everything is a copy or mix of something else. We also did a kind of performance with Peter Suchin, where we arranged desks into a circle and each stood at one, almost like a board meeting in an office building, we each then picked a word from the press release handout and then one after the other said our picked word, this was recorded. We then discussed the words said and though about how they could be placed in our exhibition, having it set up like a CEO board room was discussed.

Harold read from The Present in Drag, quotes that particularly stood out to me were: ‘ There is nothing particularly realistic about the world today. A world in which investing in fiction is more profitable than betting on reality.’ ‘ Instead of holding talks on anxiety, let’s make people anxious.’

Groups then all came together to discuss their ideas - Group D, social media, documentary, ‘technology isn’t the problem its how we use it’ - Group B, similar to D, how social interactions change, curating your identity, ‘virality’, short term, the online as a ‘space’ - Group A, relaying or disrupting the narrative, deconstruction, how it works between the art and the viewer, how do you make something now when its already in the past, the now, resistance to the collective - decided on an office setting so we should create departments, ‘the department of not right now’, ‘department of virality’- tonight think of a department, what does it do? make a proposal for a department - who? what? where? when? why? how? 

My ‘Department’ Proposal ‘Department of Public Relations’ - thought you could use something that already exists but put a twist on it. A big focus on social media platforms and advertising, how we create these false personas online and the way that people have online and offline selfs, okay on the social media layer but peaking behind the perfection to see that it is not what it seems. This could also cool to use this department in creating flyers and stuff for the show.

Discussed ideas and theories for the exhibition, we each presented our ‘department’ idea to try and create an identity for the show while being able to include everyone. Then we sorted the office into different blocks, made them into cubicles like you would often find in an office and are planning to fill each one or two with a different department

Interim Show Exhibition

To create our pieces we started by picking the objects we anted to showcase, we then designed boxes not necessarily fit to shape but room enough to input the pieces in a variety of ways, we then went about painting them white, however we were unable to Goethe finish desire so we decided to damage the boxes slightly this really played into the uneasy feeling of the piece, that unsurity as to what pieces are actually art and what parts aren't.

We then created a manifesto stating that the curators were invited to take part in a. na external collaboration allowing hem to put up the pieces in which every way they saw fit. This allowed us to be totally removed from how the final piece would look, we gave them all the tools to put the pieces up and let them too it, 

I was really pleased with how our turned out myself evened aloe really put a lot of thought into piece and were initially bit sceptical as too how much input the curators would have however we were pleasantly surprised with how they decided to showcase the pieces, they instead mounting the pieces decided to mount the month board not o the wall aswell something we had not thought they would do.

for this we wanted to explore the notion of readymades so we picked a group of objects that had relevance to us, we then crafted boxes for all of these, We wanted to add an aspect of external collaboration so we decided to leave the items un mounted and allow the curators to do with it as they pleased
