Pretty much sums up today. #artschool #intermediatedrawing #neverwantstoworkthewayiwantitto #illgettopracticingthis
2015 Intermediate Drawing - Citrus College (Prof. Rochelle Botello) 4th assignment, Abstract Art Part 1: draw 4 different, small (8.5 x 11) abstract drawings in class in about 45 min (so we had a little over 10 min. for each), and these are my four. I've mentioned this before, but doing abstract stuff is really not my cup of tea; I don't enjoy drawing things that aren't depictions of actual, specific "things", and would much rather draw something that tells a story, shows a place, characters, etc. Still, it's a great exercise because it forces me to think in a different way and create something I would never have done on my own, and I feel it's those things that really push you as an artist that help you grow and evolve.
- Abstract class drawing 1 of 4: First attempt at trying to make an "abstract" image in this class, started off well but towards the end I realized I was inadvertently making these jagged edges look an awful lot like broken pieces of glass. Also, I took way too long on this one (I think I spent a good 20 min on it, which left me with about 25 min to draw the other 3)!
- Abstract class drawing 2 of 4: Second attempt at trying to make an "abstract" image, started making these patterns with a brush pen (and then with grey markers), just creating the shapes trying to not think about what they were (but thinking about patterns), which kinda worked, though I realize they still look an aweful lot like plants or something like that (so, again, not entirely successful). It took me roughly 10 min or so, which now left me about 15 min. for the next 2 drawings!
- Abstract class drawing 3 of 4: Third attempt at trying to make an "abstract" image, and this was the first one where I finally felt it didn't really look like anything else and I could really call it "abstract" (though I realize it turned out very similar to my first attempt at an abstract drawing back in my Beginning Drawing class, where it consisted of long lines, and some reflective looking lines, so it was still tough for me to really truly break from what I was familiar with to some degree), but I really had no time to think, just had to do what I could quickly. Since this one also took me about 10 min, that left me with only 5 min for the last drawing before it was time to turn it in!
- Abstract class drawing 4 of 4: Fourth attempt at making an "abstract" image, and even though this was the quickest (and the one I like the least), it may just be the first to really, truly be "abstract." I only had 5 minutes left so I grabbed a thick black marker and proceeded to literally just try to fill up the page with squiggly lines, with no concrete visual idea in mind! Once I was done I realized the vibe kinda reminded me of Tim Burton's quirky black and white style of lines (which I really like!) but was completely unintentional! The good thing is I managed to finish this last one just in time to turn in all 4 drawings, for the next phase of our Abstract class project (where we'd place all our drawings on tables for everyone to look at, and each student would have to choose 4 random drawings by other students that would form the basis for our next assignment).
Good times! :-D

Day 2, first assignment: Look through a stack of National Geographic magazines and find images to create a large collage that conveys a message visually. This is what I came up with, about the beauty in the possible harmony of man with nature (on the left hand side of the image), versus man's tendency to destroy it in the name of "progress" through pollution, contamination, toxic waste, etc. (on the right side). I feel the overall message is pretty clear, accentuated by the overall "roundness" of images cut out on the "nature" side (indicating a softness, a harmony), versus the jagged, more aggressive edges on the left hand side (indicating things going wrong, spinning out of control), etc.

Day 1, very first drawing was this quick sketch where we had to draw the student next to us! This was a dude named Nate who mentioned he liked "Thor" when we talked, so I drew him as Na-Thor! Funny side note: He dropped the class and I never saw him again!
