Interviewer: I just want to play you Carlos‘ [of Big Time Rush] take if that’s OK, real quick, ‘cuz he was very positive about it. 

Carlos (voice): They were really nice guys. It ended up really hard for us. Look, they were like the Beatles. They came to America, and all these American girls were seeing these cute British guys, and it was like, I love Big Time Rush, but who are these cute British guys with long hair and cool accents?

Interviewer: So I wanted to ask. Obviously, you guys did the X Factor and it was like lightning, instantly. So doing those shows with Big Time Rush, you guys must’ve known Day One that, oh yes, this is gonna work out. 

Louis: To be fair on that, they definitely did us a massive favor. That experience for us was invaluable, ‘cuz we were so new to it, at that point. Things were going really well for us, but we were really, really new to it. But yeah, that first show that we played with them, that was definitely a turning point in how we perceived where it was going. It definitely felt very exciting from then on.

Interviewer: You were unique because you weren’t in matching outfits, it wasn’t choreographed. You were each doing your own thing. I mean, I know that you were, behind the scenes, kind of the brains behind that?

Louis: (Nods and smiles)

Interviewer: Again, if you were a boy band, NSYNC, Backstreet, you gotta dance, you gotta match the same. You guys did it differently. How soon did you realize that that was the move to go?

Louis: I was like, 18 at the time, and I was really, really opinionated, and I thought I knew it all. Which was really crazy going into the experience that we were going into. It felt like the right thing to do. Social media was also taking off, and you couldn’t hide behind any of that artificial stuff. But also, for me, it was never very cool to be all dressed in the same outfits. To each their own, but I never thought that was very cool, so I always strived to keep us on the right side.

Interviewer: A couple of months later, I was with you guys at the Mall of America, in Minnesota. They’d opened up a One Direction store. What was the weirdest piece of merch you’ve ever seen your face on? 

Louis: It’s so much… like… you name it, honestly, we did so much random stuff. The dolls still kind of creep me out, a little bit. They made dolls. They kind of look like me, but… that was a crazy time! You name it, we made it.

Interviewer: Do you ever get that, when you do the songs from years ago? It’s almost like— I mean, in a way, it’s like performing a diary entry. Walls was 2020, which is crazy, five years ago. 

Louis: Yeah, yeah. Especially when you write autobiographically, obviously life moves on, and things change. Sometimes the things you’re singing about might be a little bit outdated to you, but like you say, it’s kind of cool, it’s like a diary, like that.

Interviewer: Do you ever feel that, you’ve put the work into it, but you almost don’t want to release it to the world, do you know what I mean? It’s like you’ve put so much work into it, you’re so protective of it, the second before it hits iTunes, you’re like, maybe I’ll keep this for me. 

Louis: Noooo… Yeah, I think that I’m so grateful to be in the position that I am, I’m really happy to submit control in it and give it out to everyone. I like the feeling and I like the idea of that. It also helps with the idea of not procrastinating too much in certain things, because eventually it’s not going to be yours anyway. It’s going to be everyone else’s.

Interviewer: Lemonade’s a banger. That’s called baby-making music in the United States of America, man. This should be in FIFA, this should be in everything. I’ve always found it interesting where, by the time we hear a song, the song was written two years ago. So when did you actually start recording Lemonade? 

Louis: I think, like, in May [2025]? Back in May. I was lucky enough to record some of the album in Costa Rica, in a beautiful place called Santa Teresa. That was recorded there. You can kind of hear that kind of freedom.

Interviewer: The album’s done now. Knowing you, how long until you start thinking about dabbling in the next project? 

Louis: To be honest, I’m not someone who’s manic like that. I like to let it breathe. Especially since Faith In The Future went so much better than I anticipated, I kind of wanted to enjoy that for as long as possible. I think when you work so long on records… some people love starting the next thing really quick, but for me, it’s more about enjoying this, celebrating this. And as I said, letting a bit more life in.
