Internal-External (ft. Kathleen Hanna) // Stepping Up to the Mic
Day 6 of hillbillyoracle's #NonbinaryNovemberTarotChallenge
Tuesday November 6th – Internal/External
Select a signifier for your gender as you currently know it to be and select another to represent how you present your gender to the world. Shuffle the deck and look for the signifiers. The cards on the left side of both cards represent the relationship between the two, whether that’s distance, synchronicity or something else. The cards on the right side of both cards is how you could bring the internal and the external more into line if you so choose.
For my 'gender as I currently know it to be' card, the internal, I chose the Seven of Disks, mostly because of the same reasons I chose it as my significator on Day 3. My gender is ‘Wizard’.
I had a much harder time a 'how I present my gender to the world' card, the external. Most cards have images of very strongly gendered characters, a lot of whom are very strongly male. As I was going through the deck, I set aside the Three of Wands which had also come up on Day 3. The character in black, standing between the two obviously male characters, could be read as female at a glance.
The card I ended up choosing is the Eight of Cups. Though the artist was likely thinking of a male character when drawing the image, as most of the other decks out there in the world have a male character on this card, the character read as female enough at a quick glance. The depressed nature goes along with my resting bitch face. It's also the natal decan card from the Thoth deck for my spouse which I find is an intriguing coincidence.
The relationship between the two on the left side: Internal - Wheel of Fortune, External - Ten of Cups. I love the synergy of the designs. Both have zones of mandala-like shapes. The Wheel has most of its black printing at the bottom of the card, the Ten reflects the shading, with more black ink at the top. From the inside and the outside, my gender seems to be defined by my most intimate relationship.
How I can bring them more into line seems nearly moot because the harmony the cards on the left fits so well. Internal - Two of Cups, External - Four of Swords. The energies of these cards feel opposite to the rows they are on. The Two on the internal row is outgoing and joyous, while the Four in the external row feels cloistered and private. The Two is the public role as Wife that I have internalized. The Four is my meditations on choosing nonbinary as my gender on my next driver's license. That may be complicated by this RealID law, so I need to do some more work on that.

“ Art must be beautiful ”
If vampires are all about surface (hardened marble skins, beauty, glitter) then zombies are all about innards (wounds, torn flesh, emerging organs). The contemporary cultural embrace of the zombie and displacement of the sexualized and sanitized vampire may therefore be due to our increasing fascination with our own identity as this becomes ever-more problematized by technology.
