Refugee on page 244, is described as someone who is forced to leave his or her home, community, or country. I took this picture of my friend in her apartment, she is my big in my professional fraternity here on campus. She is a Bosnian refugee, when she was a child her family had to leave Bosnia to come to the United States, and find a home in Atlanta due to the war. My friend directly relates to this key concept of refugees because not only is this a very prevalent topic of conversation today in the news, but it also impacts real people. Moreover, because I have come to be a part of her life, I have learned about her struggles and the life that she has been able to create for herself, regardless of what her family experience when she was younger. I think it is vital to understand the backgrounds of various people, and I also find this very inspiring because I can relate to her in certain ways due to my childhood. If I were a sociocultural anthropologist, I would want to know more about the process of becoming a refugee and maybe more of the psychological impacts that this has on a person. I additionally think that it is important that people think about the circumstances of situations such as these, instead of just looking at the physical person.

Migration described in page 240 of the Miller textbook is described as "movement from one place to another." Many Bosnian refugees have gone through international migration, which is the movement across country boundaries. The book goes on to discuss the causes of migration are directly linked to basic aspects of life and survival such as providing for food and shelter. In relation to the picture that I have provided of my friend, I think that since she migrated to this country, these are other aspects that are vital to think about. Even though, she might not have directly worried about specific aspects of this since she was a child, her parents most certainly did have to figure out how to survive in this new place. Recently my other friend, who is in a human services class, and I have been discussing migration and the impacts that it has on many families, and in turn how this impacts one's inner and outer circles. She described this as the Bronfenbrenner ecological system, and I would really like to learn more about this. This system describes how there are many components or circles such as the inner, middle and outer circle that impact a person. For example, their inner circle are their immediate family, while their outer circle is mass media. But, although all of these circles are independent, they also intertwine to create a person, and this impacts the way in which they interact with others. If I were a sociocultural anthropologist I would take the initiative to investigate this, and maybe apply it to specific people so that I am able to understand how specific events like migration shape a person.

Internal Migration and International Migration

The above photo was taken in one of my friends rooms in Madison Hall. Nathan (left) and Garrett (right) became friends of mine at the very beginning of the year when we met on the New Student Getaway through the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. They’re both American but came from very different parts of the world to study here at GW. I’m going to explain how these roommates are examples of two different types of migration (internal and international). Nathan is an example of Internal Migration (movement within country boundaries). Nathan is from my hometown, Pittsburgh, although I did not know him before we met at GW. Nathan coming here to D.C. for the purpose of education is an example of Internal Migration because he moved within his country's boundaries to continue education after high school. Although this is not one of the terms I intended on focusing on, this is also an example of institutional migration since Nathan’s purpose of coming to D.C. was to attend a university. This goes for Garrett as well. 

Garret on the other hand, spent his previous four years of high school in Beijing China due to his family's work. In doing so he picked up on Mandarin and some unique pieces of Chinese culture. Garrett’s move to GW is an example of International Migration (movement across country boundaries). This is because Garrett moved to the states from another country. His move to China in the first place is an example of International Migration as well. I think it’s unique that two of my friends that I spend a fair amount of time with are both in ROTC, room together, have a lot of the same interests but come from two different parts of the world.

International Migration and Chain Migration

This photo was taken a couple weeks ago when my family threw a birthday party for my grandmother. In order from left to right is one of my aunts (middle child), my grandpa, my mother (oldest), my second aunt (youngest), and then my grandmother. This photo only captures my mother’s side of the family, and the aunt on the left is the middle child of the three sisters. She did not migrate to the United States when my mother and younger aunt did, and only recently migrated this past year. This represents chain migration which is described as population movement in which a first wave of migrants comes and then attracts relatives and friends to join them in the destination. My mother and younger aunt moved to the US first in order to further their education and hoped to be able to provide a better living situation for themselves and their future children. Soon after that, my grandparents were attracted to migrating to the US because they had two children who were prospering and could provide for them better as they grew older, as well as the health care in America was much more appealing to them than Chinese health care. In this past year, my aunt (middle child) moved to the US with her husband to bring the family together. And there are rumors circulating that my cousin, the son of the aunt who just recently moved to the US, has plans on moving the US as well. Finally, international migration, population movement across country boundaries, was perfectly described by the movement of my entire family on both my mother’s side and my father’s side of the family. As a first generation American, migration from China is at every corner, and there are plenty of stories to be told about their journeys to America.
