Anyone else starting to feel like they're in a digital apolocalypse? I used to log onto the internet and find community but now it just feels like tumble weeds are rolling by and I'm stood in a crumbling ghost town.

As a millennial, I am mad that the convenience and global sharing we were promised was weaponized. I loved self-checkouts, then they were used to justify cuts in staff and data for surveillance. Streaming meant we could share media and create our own things. Nope, strangled with ads and monopolies and you create the content but you don't actually have true ownership of it. Digital media meant we didn't have to waste resources, including storage space, for dvds and cds. But here we are, knowing if we don't protect it, it will be lost media at a CEOs whim.
My mom explained the "Disney Vault" to me when I was little and it made me so mad. Pretending a movie was scarce? To drive up value? To make sure people bought the entire collection? So when I could afford to buy it, I may not be able to find it? Because money? I may have been the only 8 year old with a vendetta against the mouse in the '90s. I thought it was evil. But now everything run like this. Everything.
I love having my library of books and music and all that. I now have to rebuild it with scarce pocket money if I want any pretense of actual ownership. We saw, briefly, how awesome it could be until greedy little jerks stuck their hands out for more.
I don't know. I'm just reflecting on 39 years of how we could and should have had it. It's not too late to take the shiny future back. We are just going to have to be proactive to keep it that way.
weird Internet phenomenon where people anonymously ask other Internet users for permission to do something

most epic outage i have ever seen all of toronto has zero connection. wow.
no network at all. we are suddenly completely off-line
i woke up at 3pm anyway so it hasn't really impacted me that much but there's still a lot of really good philosophical meat here, considering I didn't realize there was an outage until half an hour ago (at 5:30pm).
update: also - 911 doesn't work? idek if this will ever post - feeling like something really really bad is happening right now and i just don't know about it
