A Long Nerdy Post About Comedy And Media

As much as I love 30 Rock, Community, and any of the other comedy series that people gif, hashtag, blog and reblog about. None of them, NOT ONE, can touch Louie. I have been watching since the first episode and have love Louis CK's work for years and it is spectacular. It is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when a creative person is not willing to budge on creative control. Each episode costs just $300,000 [$200,000 in the first season] and this amount includes his own pay.

For those of you who don't realize how small that is. An episode of Two and A Half Men costs around $3,000,000 to make, ten times the cost of Louie!!!

In exchange for accepting this low budget over many higher ones offered to him. Louis has complete creative control over the show. The phrase "creative control" can mean a lot of things, but when I say complete, I mean it. Louie has no writing staff, it hires no directors, it employs no editors, and for all intents and purposes it has no producers. Instead, Louis CK writes every episode on his laptop. He personally cast the pilot. He directs every episode, it is shot on a RED camera system that he bought for his production company, Pig Newton Inc. And then he sits down at the same laptop he wrote the episode on, and edits it all in final cut pro.

Louis CK has no film degree, he has never officially "learned" to edit, he never even went to college. When he started stand-up, he quit his job at a auto shop to do it. And yet, the show is visually rich, amazingly paced, and it is true, and honest, not just to Louis' style, or comedy, or sensibility, but to the human experience. It is true to fears and worries and terrors that everyone can relate to. And above all else, when it comes right down to it, the show is blisteringly, stomach achingly, funny.
