Ramsey Burgers for heroes
On May 6th evening, Charles Ramsey discovered and freed three women who were kept captive for almost a decade in Cleveland, Ohio. And this case started to get more attention from people all across the country after Ramsey interviewed with Anderson Cooper from CNN. His seemingly candid attitude and uncanny choice of words made many laugh. And the video instantly became viral, which also made Ramsey the new Internet hero. Thousands of memes and response to the video were created and shared. A song called ‘Dead Giveaway’ was also made its debut on youtube and received almost 1.7 million views (ow.ly/mdRUG).

This fervor phenomena has positive impacts on both our community and Mr.Ramsey. More of us are informed of the incident with the help of social media and may be have allowed us to rethink about our community and pay attention to small details that happen around us. And for Mr.Ramsey, many restaurants in Northern Ohio have promised him a free meal for the rest of his life. McDonald's, who involuntarily received marketing opportunity from this case (Charles Ramsey mentioned in the interview that he had “put down the Big Mac” he was eating to save these women), also offered Ramsey a free Big Mac burger from any McDonald's for a year. Not only the free food, Ramsey has recently signed a contract with Bruce Merrin’s Celebrity Speakers & Entertainment Bureau, which will allow Ramsey to make $10,000 per motivational speech he gives. However, with all these free gifts, Ramsey expresses anger. Charles Ramsey and the case got viral with the help of social media but now social media is attacking Ramsey’s privacy as he is getting more popular.
Some restaurants are now using his name (‘Ramsey Burger’) and celebrity to market their burgers. Ramsey says, “I never told these people they could use my name for this.” And as it may be a common incident for many popular celebrities, Ramsey’s fans are creating fake Twitter accounts and FB pages in order to expand his social media appearances. It is already known and is a given that celebrities are experiencing privacy intrusion with 24/7 paparazzi escorts and the accelerated widespread of their pictures with the introduction of the Internet and social media. However, since Ramsey did not see his change of status as a public figure coming, this privacy intrusion is frustrating him.
Celebrities and public figures such as Ramsey have long been expressing their concerns and frustrations over their privacy being attacked. ‘Bling Ring,’ a film directed by Sofia Coppola, came out in theaters recently that is based on a real incident happened in 2010 called “Hollywood Burglaries.” Bunch of celebrity-obsessed teenagers were able to get addresses of celebrity homes online and committed a robbery. The incident and also the film re-remind us celebrities’ never ending privacy dilemmas and how not only the public figures but also our privacy is not kept safe anymore with the help of the Internet and various social media channels.
Then what can we do to keep our information to ourselves? Are there any solutions to this anti-privacy panic?
