something that's wildly interesting to me is the fact that our generation has managed to create several different online dialects, which are very widely use and cross border after border. if you speak English and you spend time on the internet, there is a high chance that you have developed or at least become aware of the slang. This slang is genuinely global, but unless you're brave enough to use it in person it manages to simultaneously remain localized

One of my favourite verbs in internet-era English is “to clown on sth./ sb.”

Not “to clown” or “to clown around” but specifically “to clown on sth./ sb.”

Meaning to make fun of (light-heartedly or not) and, to a lesser extent, implying parody

I just… like it and I think it usually implies light-heartedness, even if done with the intend to ridicule someone

Yes, I have seen it used to mean active bullying and/ or bigotry but that’s usually in form of the excuse the bully/ bigot makes

Anytime you see the word “waffling” or “yapping” being used to dismiss a long entry of some kind, say “Do you mean TL;DR?”

Or, if it fits better to the sitch, “Would you like a TL;DR?” meaning, “would you like a summary?”

TL;DR needs to make a comeback

This is a perfectly reasonable request to make. We should do that instead of subtly implying the other person is “wrong” or “bad” for having and writing a lot of thoughts.

If one does not have enough motivation, or mental energy, or brainspace at a given point in time to seriously consider or parse a long response, THAT IS FINE. We’re all operating on probably not enough sleep and more stress than humanity has ever had to deal with pre-modern-era.

We have more information coming at us than ever before. Feeling like digesting ALL of it is simply not going to happen. You’re allowed to opt out.

HOWEVER.

It is NOT fine to not OWN that, identify it as your own shortfall, and by using this as a neutral phrase, acknowledge that the other person’s thoughts are also valid.

I sent my mom a picture of one of my students holding up a picture they made of me and this was her response:

Translation:

SO CUTE!!!! [Literally, "HOW CUTE!!!!"] (I'm screaming...)

I love that she felt the need to let me know that the allcaps meant she was screaming. Yes, mom, that's what allcaps usually means. :)

Sometimes I really stop and think about how dramatic, hyperbolic, passionate, embellished we speak about things on the internet and everyone's just works on that level but if you took it out of this enviornment and tried to do it irl it is just so weird and awkward.
