@laraye-la asked me:
I’ve been trying to figure out different types of ships, Ex: flagships, frigates, sloops, etc but I’ve been having a really hard time finding websites about types of ships or even being able to distinguish what type a ship is. Any help is plenty, I love your blog and it’s a lifesaver for my curiosity🌊🇬🇧⚓️🤍🤍
@dont-wake-the-dragon asked me:
Hey! Just a follow up, do you know any resources for historical (age of sail specifically) ship mechanics and kind of where to look for them? Or just any resources to study the ships specifically, I think they're very cool and I'd love to learn more!
Hello you two I hope you are not mad that I put your questions together but in general, you both want the same thing.
So there is an internet site that I highly recommend for the design, history and keeping the ships apart, that it is this one. https://www.naval-encyclopedia.com They show not only european ships and not only the age of sail. They go from antiquity to modern times and I think they are still working on the site. But for a start to get familiar with the material, this page is really good.
Apart from that there are still quite good books, even if not much, because unfortunately there are independent works from country to country and from time to time. So you have to decide how far you want to go into the material and what exactly you are looking for. For example if you want to deal with the time around Nelson, Brain Lavery's Nelson's Navy is highly recommended. Here the whole Royal Navy from 1793-1815 as well as some excursions into the other navies of that time are made. These page is also very nice https://thedearsurprise.com
Otherwise I recommend The great age of sail by Edita Lausanne. Very good book. Otherwise I have only books in German which deal with the general Age of sail. But if I find one in english I will let you know. As I always work with several sources and mainly with books,so i have more specialised books and archaeological reports at home. But I keep looking and continue to work on the book list I started a long time ago. Then there is a bibliography of books that deal with this age. Might be helpful for everyone
