Topic 3.2 : Social Media Rivers
Important notes:
Everything is always open to change (Leaver, 2010)
Each tool becomes more complex and asks for more information
The web self is no longer present on one single website...user generated content is dispersed across the network...(Helmond, 2010) ie identity is networked!
Social media - user-generated content plays an important role in the identity construction by others (Helmond, 2010) eg tagging a photo or person in Facebook
There is a need for a centralised page within a network, eg your photos, videos and bookmarks on one central hub (Helmond, 2010)
Internet shadows and digital footprints never disappear completely and your digital identity will outlive you (Leaver, 2010)
Twitter is continuous partial presence - mundane messages
Footprints = intended content creation
Shadows = content created by others
Reputation management (presentation of self) = trying to provide your own context(s) to shape how your content is read (Lever, 2010)
It's important to know what a search engine is saying about us (Leaver, 2010)
Social media rivers = status updates, micro-blogs all updating to several platforms at the same time = linking Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc together so you only have to make one update but all sites are updated at once
Reflections:
Instead of having several social networking sites, I believe we should have one. Personally I don't see the point of having more than one. I feel that Facebook is great for keeping in touch with people, updating your status from time to time, and keeping your friends informed of what YOU are doing. If you want to elaborate and go more in depth about your life, then a blog would be suitable. Instead of sending your family and friends a Christmas card, birthday cards, letters in the mail, or emails - you could keep everyone informed on either Facebook or your blog.
