INTERSEXION (2012) dir. Grant Lahood Activists Mani Mitchell and Grant Lahood set out to "de-mystify" intersex, looking beyond the shame and secrecy that defines many intersex births by visiting intersex people in America, Ireland, Germany, South Africa and Australia and exploring how they navigate their way through childhood, adolescence, relationships and adulthood, when they don’t fit the binary model of a solely male and female world. Those forced to go through early surgical interventions contrast their experiences with those who grew up without. (link in title)

Intersexion Plenary

The Intersexion Plenary was very interesting. While I was aware that there existed people who had a combination of both male and female genitalia, that was the very first time that I had ever heard the term “intersex”. I grateful for hearing it because otherwise I might have used an incorrect term to address these people.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about it is the fact that so many people are not informed about these people. I knew from a young age (maybe from about 10 years old) about intersex people (although I probably used the wrong term), but in the video, there are people who say that they didn’t know that such a phenomenon, being born with aspects of both genitalia, could exist. Do parents not feel the need to educate their children beyond what they thick they might encounter in the world. But perhaps its because the parents didn’t know themselves.

In the end, I think more people, perhaps when in sex ed classes, should be informed and aware of intersex people. Information can hopefully lead to less discrimination and more active inquiries.

Plenary 4: Intersexion

All I knew about intersexion people was basically just a fact that there are intersexion people on the earth. I never thought there are so many intersexion people. 1/2000, the percentage shocked me. Then I thought, many of them must be covering their identities, which I really understand. I would not laugh at them or do anything disrespect them, but I know many people would. After watching what they have experienced, I really appreciate what I have now. For intersection people, even having a peaceful life is very hard. Although we have advanced medicine that could help them, and medical technology is getting more and more advanced, but they still lack of help. I have met really disgusting doctors who laughed at me when was sick, so I can’t imagine what those doctors would say to intersection people. I feel like parents’ support is the most important thing. This plenary reminds me of a film. In the film “Front of the class,”  the character who has Tourette's syndrome overcomes it becoming a teacher, and his mother always believes him, having his back while his  father gives up him. Many children who have  Tourette's syndrome have to live far away from society because their parents want to hide them. Some actually think this is a way to protect them. It’s hard to recognize whether those parents just think they are shame or want to protect them in a particular way.

Plenary-Intersex

On last week’s plenary we watched a movie which depicted the journey from childhood to adulthood of people who were born with both male and female genitalia. Prior to this movie the term I would have used to identify said people would have been hermaphrodite. Growing up, this was the only term I was aware of that associated with people who had both male and female part. However, thanks to this movie I walked away informed on the proper term to use and a deeper understanding of the struggles intersex people struggled/struggles with at birth and throughout their lives. One of the hardest things I learned is when a parent decides to change the genital early on, there's a possibility that the child will grow not to identify with the gender associated with the change. This was hard for me because I couldn’t fathom the emotions the adults had as children not knowing who they were, as well as going to school as and being viewed as “different” due to no one being educated on their situation.
