Interview Summary

This interview takes place during the bands coupling tour with Hanamuke titled "Otoko Danketsu Shiri" (男ダンケツ尻). They discuss their experiences on tour, their relationship with Hanamuke, and their upcoming consecutive three-month mini-album release campaign, starting with COCKAYNE SOUP on May 28th, 2003.

The tour organizers assigned hotel rooms shared between members from each band but they were surprised to find the rooms had single double beds.

The word "COCKAYNE" in COCKAYNE SOUP means "addictiveness" and the aim of the mini album was to create addictive songs.

COCKAYNE SOUP is the first recording done with Kai.

Reita says that Ruki has odd eating habits with a preference for super rich tasting foods. For example, a cheese rice bowl smothered in mayo.

The band members make fun of Uruha for being generally indecisive because he overthinks everything.

Reita shared that Ruki gets highly irritable during long road trips if he cannot eat at his preferred restaurants. Reita recalls an incident at a drive-thru where Ruki ordered two hamburgers but received only one. Having already eaten the first burger quickly, Ruki discovered the second was missing and spent the remainder of the trip sulking in a blanket.

In a recent interview, Camille O’Sullivan speaks briefly about her relationship with Aidan Gillen and offers a calm, grounded picture of him outside of his on-screen work.

She recalls meeting him during a very vulnerable period of her life, shortly after becoming a mother, and emphasises that she made no effort to hide that reality. According to Camille, Aidan was open, accepting and entirely unfazed by the circumstances, which left a strong impression on her.

She describes him as down to earth, genuinely funny, and good company — someone who brings real, unforced laughter into her life. Beyond that, she highlights his affection for his children, her daughter Leila, his mother and animals, presenting him as a thoughtful and caring presence very different from many of the roles he is known for.

Camille also mentions that he is often the more cautious one in their relationship, particularly when it comes to her openness and trust in people.

Some takeaways from the interview that I found interesting:

During this era Ruki often wrote his lyrics from the perspective of a woman because he found it easier to express deep feelings like sadness this way.

Akai One Piece is written from the perspective of a dominatrix. Ruki is teased and asked if he is into SM which he denies and Reita suggests it's actually Kai who is into that.

Juunanasai is about a 17 year old girl who becomes pregnant and is abandoned by her boyfriend. Ruki got a letter from a fan who had a similar experience and although he appreciated that they could empathize with the song, it also made him feel sorry.

At this time the band had a very positive view about their growth, wanting to explore different genres and improve their songs not only through playing them at lives but through differences in opinion as well.

"But I think if we lose that clashing spirit, it's no good. If that growth stops, that's when I think the band itself is over. That's why I have no intention of ever stopping our growth." - Uruha

Interview Summary

This interview covers the band's second consecutive mini-album "Akuyuukai" (悪友會～あくゆうかい～).

The interview starts out with the interviewer asking if the band members are bad influences as the album title literally translates to "bad friends club" or something more akin to hanging out with the wrong crowd. Kai points out that when it comes to being a bad friend, you grow closer through arguing.

The interviewer concludes the band are both good friends and bad influences for each other and brings up Ruki's junk food habit as an example. Ruki says he's eating healthier foods now and choosing water over soda. Uruha says he enjoys smoking but if you smoke too much you could get lung cancer. He heard natto is good for preventing cancer so he tries to eat it more. When the interviewer asks if he should just quit smoking he says, "I didn't think of that." (lol)

In another aside the band is asked if they are the type to confess to someone they like or be confessed to.

Kai: I’d rather be the one to say it than have it said to me. Ruki: I’d probably wait until someone tells me. Aoi: Me too. Reita: I want to tell the person I like how I feel myself. Ruki: I want to express my feelings too, but I’ll wait until they say it first.(There's no answer from Uruha)

In regard to the mini album, Ruki noted that he changed the POV of his lyrics. Until this point, Ruki wrote the lyrics from the perspective of a woman but for this release, he switched to a man's POV.

Track Breakdown:

Ito (絲): Ruki says the lyrics are based on real life events. Reita actually helped Ruki with the lyrics on this track and while working on it Ruki stayed at Reita's house for two days. (In a previous interview Kai also stayed at Reita's house to work on music. Reita jokes about how Kai is a very messy guest and after his stay his room looks like Godzilla ran through it.) Reita says he gets goosebumps when listening to the track and since he helped a bit with the lyrics he thinks, "yep that's me!"

Oni no Men (鬼の面): Ruki says this track has a very Japanese theme reminiscent of the Edo period. Uruha made the guitar parts intense to help connect with the anger conveyed by Ruki's lyrics.

Ray: This is Uruha's favorite track on the release and he says it has a sense of grandeur that they haven't had before.

Wife (ワイフ): Kai mentions the band already performed this song live several times prior and they significantly changed the arrangement for the recording.

SPERMARGARITA Track Breakdown

When asked about the album title Ruki says he originally planned an erotic theme, but the meaning shifted to "being born". Reita and Ruki joked that without sperm, humanity and “best friends” (referring to the song) wouldn't even exist.

"LINDA ~candydive Pinky heaven~"

Ruki says that "LINDA" is a term referring to their fans/audience, and reading the lyrics with that context conveys the band's true feelings.

"BLACK SPANGLE GANG"

Uruha explained the track shatters their typical sound and the guitar has a more western vibe to it.

Reita enjoyed playing it because it maintains its intro momentum throughout without switching keys.

Ruki was inspired by New York when writing the lyrics even though by this point he had never visited. When Ruki included a line about lowriders and TLC, Uruha admitted he had no idea who TLC was, prompting Kai to explain who they were. Uruha was also completely clueless about "A Nightmare on Elm Street”.

"Wakaremichi" 

Uruha says the song is the band's origin and a live staple, adding "Without this, the current Gazette wouldn't exist". They re-recorded it to capture their current sound and for new fans.

Kai recorded drums on it for the first time (since he wasn't in the band yet for the original version) and tweaked the drum patterns to fit his playstyle.

"☆BEST FRIENDS☆"

Uruha called it a great song about friendship, while Kai clarified it reflects the band's bond.

The lyrics credit reads "Dainippon Itan Geisha no Minasama". Reita explained he wrote roughly half of it (including the B-melody, chorus, and rap intro lines).

Ruki revealed Kai tried contributing rap lyrics, but all of Kai's ideas were rejected because the band laughed at them for sounding silly.

Reita says the song is meant to encourage people chasing dreams and acts as a message to themselves.

Miyavi in Zy. magazine vol. 34 (May 2007) Part 1

In this interview Miyavi talks about performing and spending time in America.

"What I ultimately felt after being over there is that, in the end, 'I am Japanese.' … To put it simply, it made me want to be Visual Kei even more (laughs). Ultimately, we are Visual Kei, and I felt very strongly that being Visual Kei is my sole identity."

the GazettE SHOXX vol. 127 (July 2003) Interview Summary Part 1

This interview focuses on the release of the mini-album Spermargarita and includes a breakdown of its tracks and some banter about travel and touring. For part one I'll summarize some of the fun banter:

The interviewer opens by observing that the Gazette’s popularity and name recognition are skyrocketing rapidly within the scene right now. Aoi admitted, "I don't really feel it... I feel like the number of emails sent to our homepage has increased, but I've never been called out to while walking around yet".

The limited edition copies for all three consecutive mini-albums completely sold out, though regular editions are being released so everyone can hear them.

When discussing travel Kai shared that he spent two weeks in New Jersey as an elementary school student visiting his cousin.

Reita pointed out that none of the other four members had ever been abroad, and revealed that Aoi was the only member who had never flown on an airplane.

On the subject of touring- Reita explained that because Ruki and Kai don't have driver's licenses, the remaining three rotate driving in 2-hour shifts. Reita complained that non-drivers who sleep in the passenger seat are annoying, though Ruki claimed he stays awake in the passenger seat to chat and keep the driver alert
