Interview with God and the Devil
Part 3
Actually, it was a relief to ask my own questions. To God, and the devil. Asking her ( God ) was uplifting because her answers gave me hope. For, not only a brighter future, but a brighter eternity. And asking the devil the questions I did helped me understand that I am responsible for my own indiscretions. The master of my own domain so to say.
So day 3 was going to bring some questions that I felt needed to be answered.
Why’s and what’s. Things that most of us wonder about, even accept, but just can’t understand.
Putting those three or four questions together would not be easy.
Driving to the Pie Kitchen, I kept changing my mind.
This or that? Did you or didn’t you? I could not decide what would be appropriate for the second to last day of the interview.
I walk in and it’s the devil only. But today, he’s not smiling.
“I had a rough night”, he says. “Sleeping in a motel always takes it’s toll on me.”
“You slept in a motel?” I ask.
“Motel 6-6-6”, he laughs. “Those assholes always keep the light on!”
About that time, God arrives. Looking splendid I might add. Red dress and heels, God is very beautiful.
Before I could even greet her, the devil pipes up. “Well heeeelllllllo”, he says. “Looking good today hun”.
I thought “who calls God hun?”
She answers, “sorry I’m late. Got a few emergency calls last night.”
“Business must be good”, the devil responds.
“Yes, thanks to you”, she says.
“Okay”, I say trying to restore some order. “I’ve been up all night myself trying to think of questions for today. But I’m drawing a blank.”
“How about us asking you?” The devil chimes in. “Just one or two each?”
Kind of nervously, I say “ok, I guess so.”
So God says, “I am first.”
“My first question for you Tim would be, are you happy with your life? Are you happy with where you are in life, and could you or would you change things?”
“Wow” I thought out loud. Just “wow!”
So I proceeded to answer. “I am, at times very satisfied, and at times wanting more.”
“That’s me!” The devil yelled.
“Let him finish” God demanded.
So I add “I look back and it’s the moments that made memories that I miss. The ones I took advantage of and the ones I should have and didn’t. What is it I remember when I think of my life?
What do I think of? Would it be the people, the good times? The happy places? Or could it be the bad things that stick like glue? Why is it so hard to remember the good things? And we we can never let go of the bad?
Looking back, there are people I think of. There are some that I wish I’d never let go of, and others I wish I never would have kept. There are things I wish I’d done. Walked that trail, smiled more, took the chance. But I didn’t.
People and places.”
And then my voice trailed off.
She placed her hand on my shoulder and said “There is still time to make memories. For you and for those who will remember you.”
So the devil takes his turn. “Do you regret the sins you have committed? Because, for the most part, you made out well by committing them.”
I shrug, “Yes, yes I do.”
I go on, “when I was young, I thought the keys to life were money, and things. I thought of women and what I wanted, much more than thanked those for what I had. I was much more selfish then. And if I wanted what was yours, I would take it. But now I don’t worry about how I look to others. Or, how I stack up to them. I have everything I need. And that’s much more important to me than what I want.”
So God smiles, and the devil shakes his head.
One satisfied and one not so much.
God then asks, “is there anyone in heaven you would like to visit? For a day?”
“Of course” I say. “Just think if you could go to heaven for the day. Not die, just to visit. I'd like to go see the people I haven't seen in such a long time. I'd like to take my kids with me. Visit with my Pappaw, they'd like him. My Mammaw too. A lot of Aunts they knew too little of. Uncles too. Cousins that were older. They missed all that. I'd love to see my Mom and Dad. They were little when my Mom passed, and never really got to know her. She'd like to talk to both of them, and maybe me too. A lot has happened since she's been gone. We could catch up. I'd like to just tell my Dad about the college experience we've had. He was such a sports fan, and never got to see my youngest play. Maybe show him pictures of my trucks, my dogs. He'd get a kick out of them. I'd like to see a couple of the old guys. Billy Schardein for one. Haven't seen him since high school. I'd like to walk around saying hello to everybody that's been gone too long. Show my girls just who I've told those stories about. Hang out with a good crowd, talk about the old days. Maybe it's like Mayberry up there, you know, people walking around with smiles saying hello to each other. Slow times. Taking the time to enjoy life. Or life after death. Like I say, I'd just like to visit. Just to show my kids who they've missed, but with everybody that's there I may want to
stay.“
“How about Hell?” The devil asked. “Bound to be some old friends there”
“Hell would be like going back to the bars I used to hang out at.” I answer. “The same old guys, in the same old seats, talking about the same old stuff. Nobody gets anywhere because they are stuck. Stuck where they are at because they live in the past. I’ll admit, it may be fun a while. A lot of fun. But, I can only take them in short bursts, and I don’t miss being in that crowd. They are vampires. They suck the life out of you. And then move on to the next fresh victim.”
“No”, I add. “I’ve been to hell. I do not like it.”
And with that, we end this day.
Tomorrow is the last day.
I’ll be up late figuring out how to end this with a bang.
The interview with God-Part 3
So today is the last day.
The day I “meet my maker” so to say.
And I have so little time left but so many questions. I have to combine them all and get the best bang for my buck.
I arrive a little early, and she is already there. No surprise really. She says “I’ve never been late for anywhere I really wanted to be.” This made me feel wanted in a way. God wants to see me? God is early for me.
“What are your questions today? You have four. And do try to make them relative to your search”, she says.
“Think about what you want. What you need to know. It may be a while before we talk again”, she added.
So I say “First, can you tell me the day I will die?”
God shrugs. Her voice softens. “I could, yes. But, I will not. Because if I did, you would not live your last days, you would dread your last days. Dying is not the end. Don’t treat it as so. Right now you are in a coma. A “coma of consciousness”. You are awake, but not awakened. When you die, you will awaken. But, until that very moment, live. Live like there is no tomorrow.”
“Wow” was all I could think. “Plan for tomorrow but live for today?”
She nodded.....yes.
So then I say “If I stop being bad, are all my sins forgiven? Or, are they forever? Do I ever get past my wrongdoings, do I end up in Hell if I don’t? Or Limbo? Is that even a thing?”
She laughs out loud. “I have no idea where that whole Limbo thing came from, but I promise you I don’t put people in time out!”
“Of course you can be forgiven. If not, no one would see me after they pass. All have sinned. All. Think of it this way. What good is a coach without a team? A bridge builder with no steel? A singer, if no one had ears? A God, with no followers? I need you. You are my flock and I am a loving God. I can’t cast away my children for mistakes. Even I have made mistakes. The whole Ark thing was a bit much. And snakes. Shouldn’t have made THOSE. YUCK!”
We both laugh this time. I’m liking her. By god, I am liking my God!
“What else” she asks?
“Are angels real? Seems like you could use some help. Especially these days,” I ask. Then I think it’s not a great question as far as questions go.
“Yes” she says, “Yes they are. I have helpers that calm, that rescue, that watch over, that report, that fight, that do whatever I need to be done. And there is an abundance of what I need done. This world is evil at times, but don’t be fooled. There is a lot of good too. My angels see to that. The voice you hear inside of you telling you to think about something, that’s my angels helping. They steer, but don’t drive. That goes back to the free will thing.”
Then she says, “Worrying is nothing more than the devil laughing in your ear. Confidence is an angel singing in it. What you have to decide is, would you rather be laughed at or sung to?”
I just stare. It was clear to me now. But I still have one more question.
“Why?”
“Just why? Why would, with all your infinite power, you make such an imperfect product? Us. We are born to fail over and over. We are so flawed, and yet, you love us? Why?” My voice was breaking up when I asked this. Visibly upset.
She place her hand on my shoulder. She smiled.
“Love is the greatest gift. Love. If I wanted perfect, I could have stayed alone. But I am a loving God. A sharing God.”
“You are not experiments. You are not lab rats. You too are angels. You are capable of miracles. But you have to open your minds to believe it.”
“And those who open their minds, will see my reward.”
“Love.”
“This is not a riddle, or a test. It is my gift. And my gift is available to all who seek it. But, seek it you must. The effort is what I reward. Nothing is given for nothing.”
“Remember what I have said here, and tell two people so that they tell two and each of those tell two. Spread my message, so all will hear.”
Then she looked at me and winked. God winked at me!
“I have enjoyed this” she says. “I talk to my people everyday, but not this way. Usually I just listen.” She laughs. “I hope I have answered everything to your satisfaction?”
“Completely,” I shrug. “This has been a most enjoyable interview.”
So, I turn to gather my notes, and then turn back toward her. “One more thing........”, but she is gone?
Was she ever really here?
I know she was.
She winked at me.
Interview with God and the Devil
Part 2
Well, that was exhilarating.
Just having them both in the same room, in what may have been literally FOREVER, was quite exciting. Fire and Ice so to speak.
Driving to the interview on day 2, I try to think of the important questions. What would people want to know? What are the “big” answers? And then I thought, “what do I want to know?”. Surely, I can take the time to ask a few questions that may seem only important to me. Selfishly for me.
So, day 2 may be MY day with God and the Devil.
My day for answers.
As I continue towards the Pie Kitchen, a million things pop into my brain.
“Am I forgiven?”
“Has the devil ever worked thru me?”
“Is God happy with the me I have become?”
“Am I fake, or legit. Does the devil make me into this person, or does God?”
Things like this......
I arrive, and look around the parking lot. Only one car. Does God drive? Or does she have an angelic Uber? Does the devil drive a black Caddy, or maybe a Mustang GT, loud AF with flames shooting out the exhaust?
Or maybe, they rode together?
They are sitting at the table when I arrive. Both drinking coffee and enjoying a sweet dessert. Maybe even a chuckle coming from God, she seems amused by the carnival act that is this devil. He is smooth. Very like able in a trust me till I throw you off a cliff kind of way.
“Good morning, Tim” says God.
“Hey Timmy my boy” says the devil.
“Morning everyone”, I say, “day 2 is here.”
“And a glorious day it is,” she says.
The devil smiles. He says “screw tradition, ask me the first question today.”
I say, “ I thought a lot about these questions today, and basically I want to get your responses to questions I have, concerning me.”
“For you, Lucifer.” “Have you ever influenced me to do your will?” “Tempted me to do what may not have been the best decision by me, for someone else?”
“Timmy, Timmy, Timmy, we both know that answer,” He smiles. “You know that feeling in your stomach after you do something that feels underhanded? That whirling uneasy nervous feeling? I put it there. Sure I whispered in your ear.”
“Things like........” he goes on, “take that, you deserve it”, “”no one sees you, do it”, and the old faithful “no one will know”.
“Timmy, we talk all the time.”
I thought to myself, “yes we do.”
“Next question is for you God.” I say in a slightly shaky voice. “Will I go to heaven? Or, have I sinned too much. I know at times I am a complete mess, and probably don’t deserve heaven. But, is there redemption for me? A chance?”
“NO!” She says sternly. “Just teasin’,” and belts out a laugh.
“Of course you can still go to heaven. You have the rest of your life to make up for any indiscretions you have done, and there are a few you need to work off! But, you, and all my children can be forgiven. That’s up to you, not me. You have to earn your place in heaven. So yes Tim, you can still go to heaven.”
I sighed heavily.
Then I heard the devil mumble, “who the HELL would want to? Boring ass place....”
“Okay then, how about one more question? This is for both, God first.” I say.
“If you two could be anybody you wanted to be, or anything, what would it be?”
God smiles really big “I would be an American Idol singer. I love their stories and to see them get better each week. There is something captivating about when a person sings to you. It can take you to a place you haven’t been, or remind you of a past memory unlike any other sensation. I love to hear people singing. I really do. But, I never get the chance. Just once, I would like to perform. To captivate because people enjoy me, versus fear me.”
“That really sounds stupid doesn’t it?” she adds.
“Yes”, says the devil.
I answer her, “I totally get it. I would love to have a voice that people listened to.” “Not dumb at all.”
Imagine this, me comforting God. Mind blown.
“How about you, Lucifer?” I ask.
“Hmmmmm, anybody huh?” He answers.
“Yes” I respond.
“Well”, he goes, “probably a sports star. Or, in a band like Motley Crue. Those dudes PARTIED. Have you seen that movie on Netflix? Damn. But, yes, a sports star too. Those guys get ALL the chicks. Everybody loves them because they can throw a ball, or shoot the hoops. What a gig!”
“Oh yeah”, he says, “maybe even a college basketball coach. I hear in Kentucky they can do just about anything they want.”
And then he laughs loudly.
“Maybe those two need to talk to her instead of me!” He continues to bellow a laugh, shaking all the pie plates in the place.
“Disgusting”, God mumbles.
“Cool”, I smile and say.
We finish our coffees, and part ways for the day. Tomorrow, we meet again.
Interview With God and the Devil
Part 4
Heading home after this interview, I felt very relaxed. When they asked me the questions they did, the words just flowed out. It was as if everything was rehearsed. So easy were the answers that I was shocked by them. I mean, I knew what I wanted to say, but usually don’t have the words at the ready.
Now, I need to plan for the grand finale.
The final sit down with the “Big Two”.
And I’ll be up all night thinking on this one.
Driving to meet them, I’m working up something special. The questions still not coming easy, but, what I have may work fine. As I walk in, both are there already. I still haven’t figured out their transportation. It seems they appear out of thin air.....
I sit down. “Good morning you two”, I greet them with.
“It’s a splendid day, Timmy” says the devil. He is one of the few that still calls me that, but it’s fine really. Apparently, he’s known me for a while. Hmmmmm. Maybe that’s NOT okay?
“How are you today Tim?” God asks. Her voice is soothing as usual.
“I’m great!” I answer. I have to admit, I am a bit smitten with her. She looks like a cross between J-lo and Salma Hayek. Dark hair, tanned, beautiful.
“Anybody want dessert? It’s on me.” I say.
The devil pipes up, “I’ll have the apple pie with the caramel icing. That has been tempting me all week!”
God says “only coffee for me.” “I am trying to watch my figure.”
And I think to myself, do I say that her figure is just about perfect? Would that be rude? Harassing? Should I even comment?
But before I have a chance, the devil says, “Girl, eat some pie! Your figure is perfect!”
A compliment? Or sexual harassment? I don’t think he cares.
She responds “well, thank you. I have been working hard. It gets tougher when you get older. And I, am old as time itself!” Then she laughs.
He mumbles something lewd, but we let that go.
“My first question today is for the devil,” I say quickly. “Do you ever do good deeds? Anything that would seem fair and honest?”
“Of course,” he says. “After all, what is good and what is bad? I think most times it’s a matter of opinion. Who’s to say what I do is bad? I just expose people that will do those bad things. I tempt. But I have never made anyone do anything. I have never threatened. I just tempt. Is that bad? Maybe.”
Then he adds, “I didn’t create these things, I just expose these things.”
“Surely by now you see I’m not a bad guy?”
And I thought, “he really doesn’t seem bad.”
But Rick and Cal didn’t either.......at first.
“Next question is for God” I proceed. “This world seems to be in a dump right now. Can we be certain things will get better? Is their hope for humanity?”
“Yes Tim, yes there is hope” she says in a voice that is calm and reassuring. “Yes.” “There is light at the end of the tunnel. Good days will come for those who wait. Patience is the key. I know that sometimes the only things you hear are bad news, but trust me, there is plenty of good in this world. It just isn’t sexy. So you don’t find out about the person that picks up the fallen. Only the one who knocks them down. With the era of mass communication came the era of mass miscommunication. It’s too bad. Simpler times seemed better, but they weren’t really. People just tended to their own business. And it felt better.”
“Know this Tim,” she adds.
“Every rain cloud only holds a certain amount of water. The sun will shine again. Every tear will dry, and a smile will replace it. Bad days and bad moments, they too will pass. Ebbs and flows.”
I felt a weight lift inside me. And God said sexy.
“Now both” I say. “A question for both, because you two probably have different takes on this. Evolution. Or creation? What really happened?”
The devil leans in “monkey to man? The creation stuff is pure bullshit. Now I realize a seed or two was planted. But, men are animals. Pure and simple. If it wasn’t for opposing thumbs, pigs would rule the world.”
“He’s right to a degree. Of course the planet has evolved. But, an intersession was done to create humans. A higher being was created by giving a spark of reasoning and problem solving aptitude to Adam and Eve. That’s where the creation angle came in. It took longer than seven days though. That’s a great story, but not accurate.”
She went on to say, “I know the church wants you to buy the creation story, but those guys are selfish. They want you to believe in them only. The world is a miracle. I created her, and she created many things herself. One of the creations is a mind that can decide for itself. Use that. Don’t believe everything you see and hear. Explore and discover. The world can be your creation.”
So the time was getting near. Final questions. Final thoughts. Final words.
And that’s how I term it.
“Final words?” “Lucifer first”, I ask.
“Well, I just want people to realize, I am not as bad as they say I am. Sure, I’ve done some bad stuff, maybe a little more than bad. But I am not a monster. I give people a choice. I don’t jump out of closets, or walk down dark hallways in nuns outfits. I am a clear temptation. You see me coming a mile away. And some people wave me in. Again, I just expose what was already there. A trait that is inside nearly everyone. We all can be tempted. We all will be tempted. But will we all act on that temptation? Just remember, everything is fixed, and you can’t change it. So, I don’t know. I’ve been doing this a long time. I’m never surprised anymore.”
“Thank you”, I say. “It’s actually been a pleasure to see you so soon, although I hope it may be never again!”
We both laugh. Like I told you, he’s cool.
“Maybe we will Timmy boy, maybe we won’t”, he laughs.
“How about you God? Last words?” I ask.
“Everything I could say, has been said before. Or wrote down. But I will say I hope my message gets out. The message of hope. Hope in yourself and in humanity. The message of righteousness. The message of clarity, and belief. This is a good world. You are good inherently. I made you that way. Believe that. I visit here often, so I am always with you. Know that. Feel my presence when you feel that cool breeze on a hot day. Hear a laugh. Smell your favorite flower. Always with you. You are never alone.”
“Do these things. Keep your opinion to yourself. Help someone that can’t help you back. Give a little. Time, money, a hand, whatever. Mind your own business. And, for God’s sake, treat others how you want to be treated. It’s that simple.”
And with that, we were done.
“Thank you both so much”, I said. “You have no idea what this means to me.”
“Speaking for both of us”, the devil says, “Yes we do”.
He goes on, “Timmy boy, it’s been real.”
I smile.
God says “see you later.”
Does that mean......I made it?
We’ll see. We’ll see.
