INTERWEAVE KNITS is my favorite knitting publication, but with this Summer 2017 issue they have outdone themselves by combining Shakespearean fantasy with beautiful yet practical knitwear. In addition, each project is accompanied by a charming verse written in iambic pentameter. If you are tempted to protest, “I can’t wear Olivia’s Cape (lower left) or Sebastian’s Cardigan (lower right) during the hot summer months!” fantasize and dream of Twelfth Night (January 5th) while you knit away under the air conditioner! Despite what those high school and college pedants tried to mis-educate and dull down, Shakespeare was all for fantasy -- even enjoyment!
Are you still thinking, “Hey, but we are going into warm weather, and didn’t the bard write a play called ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’?” You’d be right, and there’s the Goodfellow Top (upper right) in a linen/wool blend for a quick work-up. If you are really ambitious, try Titania’s Shawl in a gorgeous ethereal silk lace-weight yarn or even Puck’s Tunic in a cool cotton/linen blend (both designs by Susanna IC).
You may also find the article social history of the lace-makers of the time informative, “Spinsters, Free Maids, Tells & Shakespeare.” The issue is available now both in print and digital -- definitely not one to be missed!
