My friend, Indigenous artist Rubén Cordova, installing his Inti (Sun) and planting an acacia tree in a ravine in his community, Llambu Rumi, on the Summer Solstice day. The place is where men from the community take ritual baths before Inti Raymi celebrations, starting today.

I didn't have the time to watch it since the beginning but I still have the weekend for that 😄

What I did watch was more females roles in the ceremony.

And the thing is, women have always been there!!!!!

Women have been an important part of the community since the beginning of life in what we now call Peru, and people recognized them as such (eg).

What happens is that, unfortunately, in Peru there isn't a big investment in the history/culture. (I could be wrong, but I think most of the discoveries have been made by foreigners).

So little by little, women are getting the recognition (at least in this ceremony) that they deserve.

As a soldier, as protectors of the sacred fire (introduced this year), as daughters of the Sun...

And let's be honest, the Incas didn't build an empire of nearly 12 million people just by making alliances; there was bloodshed. But we can't deny that in this empire, nature was held most sacred. They revered it, celebrated it, there was a connection between people and nature that I feel many humans have lost today. That's why, for me, it's really important that Inti Raymi is still celebrated.

24 juin : la fête du soleil des Incas

On se croirait un peu dans une scène de Tintin et le Temple du soleil. À Cuzco, au Pérou, les descendants des Incas, aidés par l’office du tourisme, ont réactivé la Fête du soleil (Inti Raymi).

La dernière avait eu lieu en 1535, en présence de l’empereur des Incas. À l’époque, cette fête, la plus importante de l’année, se déroulait le 21 juin et faisait figure de jour de l’an. Elle marquait la fin d’un cycle et le début d’un nouveau.

Le grand spectacle qu’elle présente a aujourd’hui une vocation essentiellement touristique. Il se déroule le 24 juin sur l’esplanade de Sacsayhuaman, à 2 km de Cuzco, dont la place d’Armes est trop exiguë pour accueillir les quelque 100 000 spectateurs dont certains ont payé cher des places dans des tribunes pour assister à ce spectacle “haut en couleur”, comme l’on dit dans les guides touristiques.

Plus récemment, Quechuas, Aymara et d’autres peuples amérindiens ont, eux aussi, renoué avec des célébrations du solstice d’hiver (nous sommes dans l’hémisphère sud).
