“Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. 19 Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.”
20 And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.” 21 So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.” - Exodus 20:18-21
We always have a choice to make. Will we draw near or stand far off?
The Israelites saw thunder, lightning, loud sounds of a trumpet, mountain smoking, and it freaked them out, so they trembled and stood far off. They were afraid of the glory of God.
Moses saw all the craziness, but he knew God was there, so he drew near.
Moses saw a thick darkness, but he drew near.
He was not afraid of the dark because he knew God was there.
He was not afraid of all the thunder, lightning, sound of trumpets, mountains smoking, because he knew, God was there.
In the following verses, God speaks directly to Moses. Because Moses drew near, he heard clearly from the Lord.
Are we willing to draw near even when it might scare us? Are we willing to go against the crowd who is afraid, to touch the garment of Jesus to get healed? Are we willing to draw ever closer, ever nearer? God made it so much easier for us in our generation, post-Jesus, because all we have to do is confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts that Jesus Christ is Lord, and the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us. God knew we’d freak out, so he was like, okay! Holy Spirit, inhabit my people because they are afraid to draw near.
Don’t be afraid to draw near, even when all you can SEE is darkness. Because the God of COMPLETE Light is there. You just can’t see with your eyes.
Don’t be afraid to draw near when all you can see is lightning, hear thunder, smoking mountains, craziness. Don’t be afraid. God is there.
God is near in the darkest neighborhoods around you. God is near in the nightclubs. God is near in the strip clubs. God is near in the casinos. God is near. Draw near. He is working. God is near in the churches. God is near in government. God is near in politics. God is working in the “greatest sinner you’ll ever meet”. Draw near. Draw near. Meet God. Find God. He is near. Ever good, ever working, ever loving. God is near in your marriage. God is near in your divorce. God is near in the death of your beloved. God is near in your tears and in your celebrations. Do you see Him? Do you hear Him?
Draw near, shake off the chains of fear. He is Here.
