my review of game on by navessa allen that im copying from my good reads because i just need people to understand how FRUSTRATED this book made me
Short review:
Wow they took the annoying side character and gave him his own story. What could go wrong?!
Long review (spoilers):
I'm mad. I'm mad at this book I'm mad because I was so excited for it. I liked Caught Up but I LOVED Lights Out and Game On is just this ugly creature of mediocrity that sways towards badness more often than not. The one part I liked was the ending with Tyler talking with his dad. I thought it was interesting. I wish we got more of them.
Tyler. I hate him. He is so unlikable he's so unfunny he's just annoying. Reading from both he and Stella's perspective is exhausting. And I don't like Stella much better! I'm not a big fan of the whole "gloomy dark cloud pessimistic" archetype in general, and she's all it's worst qualities boiled into one. The two of them don't have a single cute or enjoyable moment. You couldn't make me believe they were actually attracted to each other and maybe I'm just not as into hate sex as I thought I was but I have read and seen some damn good enemies to lovers, and this is not it in the slightest.
And it's repetitive. They go to a party. They hate each other. Tyler is a bitch. Stella talks shit. I'm BORED and that's something neither of the other two books did at any point. By the end I was practically skimming it, I couldn't care at all.
This is only not 1 star because I enjoyed the ending stuff, and AJ. I wish we saw more of him. But also, he, Tyler, and Stella have no chemistry together. We don't get enough of him for the idea of him being their third to work.
I'm just mad. And disappointed. Because I wanted to like this book and I went into it excited to read it. Maybe I would've liked it more if I had listened to it. I decided to buy it since I ran out of Spotify listening hours at the time and decided to pick it up, but I wish I hadn't.
1.75 stars. Not necessary to read
