When you have to make up a drink, that's both meaningful and tasty, you have to test it out before the shoot! Especially if it's New Year's Eve. Lol . The warmest of welcomes to this, Backstage Forward’s Tumblr page. It’s here where we’ll delve Into the Underworld of theatre making, where we’ll collate, collect and curate all things to do with our upcoming (inaugural!) production of The Adding by super talented playwright Ciarán Myers.
By entering the underworld we’re inviting you to follow the whole process of this production, from the start (that’s now!) until after the production has finished. We will be updating this Tumblr at regular intervals with new content and developments within the show. Kind of like an online scrapbook if you will. We’ll be collecting design images, posting photos of rehearsals and set build, and the thoughts and feelings of our production team, giving you an insight into the how and why of theatre-making.
As I mentioned, The Adding is a great new play by award winning playwright Ciarán Myers. A recent graduate of Central School of Speech and Drama we’re really excited to be able to showcase this brand new work, and put our quirky slant on it. The play follows our main protagonists as they act out their lives, and as an audience we witness them struggle to be better people but fail spectacularly. Not to give too much away (we want to maintain some mystery!) we follow them through life, and into death, where we finally realise the consequences of their poor life choices. It’s intense, funny, political and sexy. There’s not much more you can ask for from a play! We’re developing loads of intricate elements that you’ll be able to see in development, in detail. Including a multi-use set and a puppet.
We’re really lucky to have the incredible McKenzie Brown Media with us to document the whole process on film, in real time. So you’ll know exactly where we are, what difficulties we’re facing, and what triumphs!
Backstage Forward believes in the openness of the arts. We believe in improving accessibility in the arts, as something for everyone. This is our way of trying to open up the process to those that may not necessarily have access to theatre, but might have the skills that are needed backstage. If you like theatre, you’re more likely to be a member of production staff or backstage team than an actor. And it’s such a varied world calling for all kinds of skills, but it’s still shrouded in an air of mystery. We’re throwing off the shroud and inviting you in! We want to build people’s confidence in understanding what goes on backstage to carry forward beyond your experience with us.
Or just enjoy it all for what it is!
On a personal note, myself and Catherine are really too excited to be able to bring The Adding and Into the Underworld to you. We have to calm ourselves down at regular intervals. We’re finally able to deliver our vision, in a small, but oh so real way.
So. This space is here for you. Use it as you will. Make comments, make connections, suggest things you’d like to see. Drop in and out, choose who or what you want to follow, or join us for the whole narrative, just be sure to create your own experience. We’ll be updating constantly and will try to be responsive to requests. This is your experience of the production, so join in and tell us what you think! On Twitter we’re at @backstage4ward, #TheAdding #IntoTheUnderworld
Don’t forget to buy tickets, and book onto our workshops.
