Intuitive Eating--Eat Whatever You Want AND Lose Weight!
Eat whatever you like, when you're hungry, and stop when you're satisfied--that's the most basic explanation of intuitive eating. When I'm satisfied?! But I'll never be satisfied! I can eat six cookies and a few bowls of cereal without thinking twice! I'll never lose weight eating what I like, that's crazy! If you're thinking something similar, don't worry, you're not alone. We've been told over and over again by the diet industry that diets are what help people lose weight, diets make people happier, diets give people the bodies they've always wanted. But do they? If there was a diet that really did that, don't you think everyone would be on it and the obesity epidemic would be over? Problem is, that would be disappointing news for the diet industry, whose main concern is making money off people by promising quick fixes and solutions that just don't work for 99% of people as a lifestyle change. So if you still want to lose weight and feel better, what options exist besides a diet? The diet industry wants you to believe there are none, but fortunately, they're wrong.
Think back to when you were just a little kid. How did you spend your summers? If you were like me, maybe you played outside a lot with your friends, ran around the neighborhood, watched some TV, played with whatever toy was entertaining you at the time being (Tamagotchis anyone?). Do you have many memories spending all your time thinking about food and losing weight? Memories about eating so much food you made yourself sick because you said you would just eat better tomorrow? Memories about feeling terrible about yourself and forcing yourself to work out endlessly and restrict your calories? Me neither. I remember my parents having to call me in to eat because I was so engrossed in whatever game I was playing. I remember playing for hours before I finally headed inside because I realized I was hungry. I remember eating normal amounts of food and not feeling guilty for eating "bad foods." So what causes us to lose touch with our natural hunger signals and a healthy relationship with food to an obsession with food and weight to the point that it feels like our life revolves around it? It'd be easy if we could pinpoint one cause and address it, so the obsession never began, but unfortunately, there are many causes. As kids, we are programmed to listen to our body cues and signals and know when we're hungry and when we're not. We asked for food when we were hungry and didn't bother to stop playing until we noticed we were hungry. So one of the main reasons we lose touch with our natural hunger signals is when outside forces start influencing our eating decisions. Your parents tell you to finish everything on your plate even if you aren't hungry or don't like it (I think I set a world record for taking an hour to eat 13 green beans). A constant stream of commercials and advertisements portray food as something that should be eaten to make you happy, when you're bored, when you're sad, and to celebrate just about anything. Magazines tell you when you should eat, what you should eat, and how much you should eat to look like the people on the cover. All of these things start to become more relevant with age, and so we begin eating based on external cues and advice rather than trusting our own body signals that tell us when we're hungry and full. After a while, if we ignore something long enough, we become so out of touch with our body signals that we don't even hear them anymore. Instead we hear people saying we should be eating 5-6 times a day; people saying we should never eat saturated fat; people saying we should eliminate all processed food from our diet; people saying anything and everything to get us to buy into their claim that this diet will work. Yeah, right. Well, what's the good news then? The answer to your diet prayers is actually something you already have and have always had, you just need to start listening to it again--your brain. Your brain is the one responsible for sending hunger and thirst signals to you when it needs to. Your brain is the one responsible for sending fullness signals when you've given your body enough fuel. But your brain is also the one trying to convince you that this newest diet will work; that you'll never lose the weight so you might as well eat what you want; that food will fix things when you're upset. So getting back in touch with eating because you're hungry is just a matter of listening to the brain signals that don't come with a negative connotation. But if you're like me, you have negative conversations in your brain a lot during the day; how can you just not listen to them? Well, for a while, it won't be easy. But remember how as little kids eating normally comes naturally and eventually we ignore our own internal signals enough that they fade away? Well, same goes for those negative comments your brain makes all day trying to get you down--if you ignore them long enough they will go away; it just takes time and persistence. You'll find though, that the more you honor your true hunger signals and eat when you're hungry; you'll be more satisfied with eating and have no need to feel guilty because you're fueling your body when it tells you it needs it. It feels so satisfying to be able to eat the foods you like when your body tells you it needs fuel and to not feel guilty afterward, that eventually those negative comments just won't have enough room to survive in a brain crowded with satisfaction from eating when you're hungry and more trust in yourself to decide what your body needs. And what it doesn't need is another diet; it just needs you to listen :)
