Revue Faire No. 6 (A series of gestures: Invisible Touch, from Farocki to l’Architecture Aujourd’hui, some notes on the handling of things) / Available at www.draw-down.com / In the sixth issue of Revue Faire [To Look at Things], graphic designer and graphic design historian #CatherineGuiral interrogates hand-based gestures in a range of wide-ranging sources, including Harun Farocki's 1997 film The Expression of Hands (Der Ausdruck der Hände)which in turn samples Samuel Fuller's 1953 Pickup on South Street; Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's graphic novel The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier; various covers and issues of the mid-century French magazine L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui; Herbert Bayer’s 1937 photograph, Autoportrait, and the subsequent commentary on this work by American art theorist Rosalind Krauss; Godard’s 1984 film Je vous salue, Marie; and Caravaggio’s The Annunciation. Guiral also references Albert Laffay’s “Great Image-maker” invented for his 1964 book, Logique du Cinéma; Dyk Rudenski's 1927 teaching manual for actors; and Alberti’s De Pictura, before delving into Paul Elliman’s 2013 collaboration with Fiona Banner's Vanity Press (published by Roma Publications as their 210th book), and exploring the idea that readers themselves engage in hand movements while paging through a physical book.
