she doesn't answer at first.
it was, sad and beautiful and tragic. it was sad, in the way you look at something with regret and anger while still trying to hold onto the good. it was beautiful, in the way you see a child and all their possibilities. the love you have for them, so pure and magnificent, almost overwhelming.
it was tragic, because inoichi was left behind with only bitter memories of a forever he almost had. an endgame he nearly touched. so close, only to be ripped away.
yoshino doesn't answer because she knows her words will only ring hollow. they will not bring comfort because inoichi is just like her; he would rather take the suffering than empty sympathies. he has taken on the pain and fought it every day and it would be insulting to think simple words could fix anything for him.
she doesn't answer but she gets up and slowly pries a sleeping little ino from the crib installed in the nara compound's living room, where inoichi and her have now spent countless hours. if her words can't help, she knows something that can.
yoshino walks back to inoichi and gently places his daughter in his arms. it's automatic, the way they both grab onto their infants now, something instinctive and natural they both share. she then sits next to him on the couch and allows her head to fall on his shoulder so she can watch ino's expression, how she relaxes immediately against her father's chest.
deep down, yoshino knows inoichi will eventually need to face the hurt leftover from his wife just disappearing on him. she knows it is a wound that will need tending. at the same time, she thinks he's allowed the small kindness of holding his child, the one good thing that came out of this. not the memories, who turned sour, not the love, which was betrayed. but ino, little ino who will stay untouched by it all.
she's the beautiful in the tragic. she's the hope inoichi can cling to.
