Receipt, dated June 19, 1992, from a purchase by Providence, RI record store In Your Ear Records of five copies of issue #1 of my fanzine, Nonstop Diatribe.
This is one of a number of receipts from record stores and other retail outlets where I was shopping around the first issue of my fanzine. From the date, I can see that I was in Providence for the Velocity Girl/Velvet Crush concert later that night at Club Babyhead. So of course I hit all the record stores along Thayer Ave that afternoon, including the Providence branch of my on-and-off employer, In Your Ear Records.
While IYE was a three-store chain, the Providence store operated semi-independently, so I knew I’d need to sell directly to them. And when bellying up to the counter with my bag of zines, the clerk I got to help me was... Ric Menck of Velvet Crush himself!
From the receipt, it looks like Ric was initially going to accept these on consignment, but as he perused the pages, that turned into an “outright buy.” I also must have been angling to interview him for the next issue of my zine, as Ric helpfully wrote his phone number on the back of my receipt.
And while I never did end up interviewing Ric, I know that he gave my fanzine a good read. How do I know this? Well, he ended up sending me a very long letter about my review of the first Velvet Crush album. Even though it was a positive review, it was not an unqualified rave, and Ric presented an ardent defense. When I finally published issue #2 of my zine in 2017, you bet I included an excerpt of that in the Letters section.
