Large Iolite Lingam with Sunstone 🌞 Iolite has always had a soft spot with me. I love the indigo color and adore the flecks of sunstone that glitter in the sunlight. It mainly comes from India, and when in gem form, is one of the most pleochroic minerals on the market. It is even more special because it is trichroic rather than dichroic. This means, when viewed down the multiple axes, the colors you see will vary from light and dark violets, and yellows and browns. Iolite is one of the most pleochrolic stones available on the market. For those not familiar with pleochroism, the wiki definition defines it as: an optical phenomenon in which a substance has different colors when observed at different angles, especially with polarized light. Though it is much more easily seen in a gemstone or thinner slice of Iolite this phenomenon still exists on thick stones if light were able to get through them. With Iolite, you will see blueish purpled in one direction and brownish yellows in another. Iolite is also known to have Sunstone growing with it in many cases. You can see the light orange sparkles in this sphere capture in the above photo. It is even better as the sphere is moved.
