Review: Monsters Ate My Metropolis Genre: Card Battle Release Date: August 13th, 2015 Developer: Pikpok/Adult Swim Games Price: Free Heart Of The Cards Monsters Ate My Condo was one of my iOS games when it came out a fresh take on Bejeweled it was followed up with a sort of spinoff/expansion called Super Monsters Ate My Condo. Now after some time a brand new Monsters game is finally but it might not be what you expect and while it does suffer from a few free-to-play pratfalls it is still an enjoyable take on card battle games. The actual combat system is fairly simple with the game following a Rock Paper Scissors style combat system. When both monsters pick a card the battle phase begins each card has a simple touch based minigame to activate it. These range from tapping in the middle of circle or tapping as a hand spins around a clock. There are some wrinkles to the cards as well as some have special effects like poisoning or giving increased damage when the elements are the same it doesn’t add much but it is appreciated. The game is over when either the monster or the cities health reaches zero. On paper this may sound incredibly boring the presentation helps immensely. Each card has a little animation to it and they are a treat to watch. If you are in a hurry though you can speed up the animations but they really never get old. The game also visually looks great both the monster and the city are well detailed and the sprites are super big and the cards are easy to understand as well. The music though is easily the highlight it only is one song but it is so catchy that you won’t mind plus you can turn on your own music as well. The victory and defeat themes however are the greatest things ever you will laugh so hard and they show just how much the developers had making the songs up. Unfortunately not everything in this package is solid gold. This being a free-to-play game some monetization had to be included the game has 2 currencies Tokens and Diamonds. As you play the game you earn tokens and XP the XP levels your monster up and unlocks bonuses and Tokens unlock the other 3 monsters and regular packs of cards. Diamonds on the other hand unlock better and rarer cards which means that someone could spend actual money and put someone who didn’t at a disadvantage. This is the norm but it still is unfortunate. There is also an energy system but it is generous and you can usually play 5-6 matches before you have to wait and even then it isn’t that long before you start another match. Their is also a lack of Single Player content all you do is face off against other opponents online and while this is fine I do wish their was a Single Player included in some form. I do however enjoy the fact that on top of making your monster the strongest you also have a city that gets attacked and levels up as well. I do wish the population you get from winning fights went towards upgrading the city but the lite city building aspect is a nice touch. Overall, Monster Ate My Metropolis won’t set the world on fire but with a fun and simple combat system, a great presentation, and a pretty fair monetization system I can recommend you check this out. We can all breathe a sigh of relief because the wait is over, Doodle Jump has finally hit the iPad and for those of you that don;t know what it is, crawl from under your rock and listen up. This game, developed by Lima Sky, is a member of the "endless genre" and, in particular, it is an endless vertical jumper.
You guide the character, Doodle, through a series of platforms by tilting the iPad left or right while avoiding such perils as moving, broken, and disappearing platforms, goofy looking alien creatures, and UFOs. The controls work just as great as the iPhone counterpart and the only complaint I could possibly make would be just the weight of the iPad itself over long periods of time, but who is playing Doodle Jump for more than ten minutes at a time anyway, right?
The aesthetic of Doodle Jump for iPad is very simple with a graph paper background with various randomly placed holes and tears and cute hand-drawn characters, titles screens and buttons. Lima Sky has been great about supporting this game over the years. They have given their customers many themes and costumes to use in game usually one to represent each major holiday. The only thing that holds Doodle Jump back is its lack of any collectibles or reward system to keep you working toward a goal; these games need to have that "carrot on a stick" gameplay so you will want to play more. It does, on the other hand, have leaderboards and multiplayer so you can challenge your friends and compare your jumping skills with people around the world.
In a nutshell, what I'm trying to say here is: just buy it. The gameplay is tight and appropriate for the platform and it's also a great looking game, especially on the iPad's big screen and I know you can afford the $2.99 cover charge.
