Do we have a timeframe for exactly when Old Yharnam burned? going w/ the theory that the nightmare is the reflection of its inhabitants, if the beginning is a reflection of the burning then at least someone there must have been present, but Djura is still alive and that means it couldn't have been THAT long ago. The Church has what seems like a pretty long history and it seems so strange to me to include such a comparatively recent event, unless things are way more compressed than they seem
Ok there’s a few things to address here. Firstly, timelines in this game (as with all other Soulsborne games) is extremely finnicky and made doubly so by the fact that characters’ lives are artificially extended and many of them are more or less immortal. Willem, for example, is apparently still alive and kicking in Byrgenwerth, although the exact nature of his current state of existence is ambiguous. Henryk is also described as being unnaturally long-lived. A lot of this is apparently caused by the plague of beasts. With that in mind, I think Djura is actually just old as hell. The three areas of the DLC are also apparently different stages in a the timeline, moving progressively further back. But there’s stuff that’s also contradictory and weird. For example, apparently the beast scourge and the hunt already exist by the time that the Fishing Village is ransacked (Maria is an apprentice of Gehrman, already an established Hunter) yet the crazed NPC blames it on Byrgenwerth. Here’s how I personally order it in my head:
Kos washes up in the Fishing Hamlet. The Hamlet’s inhabitants subsist off her carcass and are gradually transformed, becoming the first Kin ascendants in the modern age.
Byrgenwerth unearths the Pthumerian tombs and begin a new age of exploration. They make contact with the Eldritch Truth, most likely through the voice of Oedon. Caryll, channelling the voice of Oedon, transcribes them into runes. The first amongst these is Metamorphosis, which possibly triggers the Beast Scourge. Gehrman discovers bells that allow him to cross between realms and becomes the first Hunter, takes on a bunch of other people as apprentices.
Forbidden Blood (probably the corruption rune) is brought back to Cainhurst from Byrgenwerth. This blood/rune is likely Yharnam’s, and the nobles are IMO descendants of the Pthumerians, so the betrayer who took back corrupted blood was probably a double agent for Cainhurst from the beginning.
Laurence, Gehrman and co., still under the Byrgenwerth umbrella, come across the fishing village and the carcass of Kos. Laurence wants to experiment on the Old Blood; Willem disagrees. Laurence departs Byrgenwerth with Gehrman and others to found the Healing Church.
The Hamlet is ransacked and the dissection findings are used in the Research Hall. The Umbilical Chord is split at some point, one part is used to ascend Rom. This is possibly the event that pulls the Lecture Theatre into Nightmare.
The Orphan of Kos is stillborn and creates the Hunter’s Nightmare to punish all those responsible, and all future hunters. The Fishing Hamlet is pulled into this nightmare, Gehrman is forced to experience the Orphan’s pain and trauma. Possibly the event that creates Ebrietas/ACB and pulls the entire original Grand Cathedral into Nightmare, hence the ruins beneath the waking GC. This might also have possibly come much later. I definitely believe that the cathedral with the Surgery Altar is the original GC and the current one is a reconstruction, which is then reflected in the Nightmare, hence why there are two.
Maria dies at some point. Gehrman is distraught, creates the Doll. Working with Laurence and using another third of the Umbilical Chord, they beckon the Moon Presence, which pulls Gehrman into the Hunter’s Dream and recreates the Workshop.
Beast scourge continues to spread, at some point Laurence deems it out of control and orders Ludwig (a former student of Gehrman) to burn the city to the ground. This involves betraying the non-Church hunters who lived there. This is why Ludwig suffers such denigration; he lives the rest of his life as a despised traitor.
The Powder Kegs were possibly involved with the burning or betrayed by Ludwig, maybe both. Fun fact: The Piercing Rifle, belonging to the Oto Workshop, counts as a Church Firearm. Oto Workshop is Church affiliated, Powder Kegs are Heretical. Ergo, the Powder Kegs resisted Laurence’s wishes, Ludwig turned on them, the survivors were branded heretics. When he passes into the Nightmare he’s left in a horrific state forever. Djura survives and sets himself up defending Old Yharnam.
After continued experimentation, Laurence discovers the Beast’s Embrace rune and transforms into the first Cleric Beast, but this ultimately fails to yield transcendence. Laurence is executed, possibly by Brador, who is driven mad by the knowledge and wears his scalp. The secret to Beasthood metamorphosis is locked away by the Church. Laurence passes into the Nightmare. His “human” skull has already been reflected in the Nightmare (old) Grand Cathedral as a symbolic reminder of his lost humanity. He’s on fire to symbolize his role in the burning of Old Yharnam, possibly?
With everybody important passed into the Nightmare, the Church continues to operate according to Laurence’s legacy. Gehrman is written out of history. At some point Logarius takes the executioners to Cainhurst and a bloodbath ensues. Successive Vicars take on clerical responsibilities as the face of the church.
Meanwhile, the Choir and the School of Mensis spearhead further research. Infirmary duties are separated from the main church and moved to other locations, like Iosefka’s. Choir pursues ascendence through Ebrietas, succeeds in perfecting the Celestials. Mensis instead focuses on Pthumerian research and the Queens of Blood, splits at some point and goes into hiding in the Unseen Village.
The first Mensis ritual is performed using the final Umbilical Chord, Mensis makes contact with Mergo, both are stillborn, and Nightmare of Mensis is created and Micolash and co. are all pulled into it.
School of Mensis continues hoarding live subjects in preparation for another ritual, to beckon “the One” back into the world. Still no idea what the fuck the One Reborn is, could be a reincarnation of the Orphan, or Mergo, but I find both unlikely. I like to think it’s an End of Evangelion scenario lmao, attempting to transcend humanity by amalgamating all biomass into One being.
Either way, this is apparently related to the Paleblood Moon. How? I dunno. Anyway that takes us to the present, with our hunter waking up on the Night of the Hunt.
