3, 2...17. Four diamonds and a triangle-laced fence. So many ups and downs. This is a teeter-totter life hanging on what was probably a bad investment, but they put on a good face and keep an immaculately maintained motel register.

The banality of the place spills out and returns in a couple of sad puddles. Everything says halfway house, but the flowers. Someone cares. And if you grew up in a motel, you might have learned how to make a bed without folds. 

You’d almost understand why the doors are still freshly painted.  

Few people come here anymore. They no longer heat the pool. You think you might drown in ambivalence, but it’s still possible to swim. There are 27 channels to choose from once you slump into the bed.

And when it rains, this is perfect shelter. 

If you advertised, you might say: “deep sleep here.”
