Cullen knew how much Ellana disliked the stormy weather that raged outside, so he made sure to get home as quickly as he could. The rain, while intense, presented no real danger to his safety. Besides, he actually enjoyed watching the patterns in the sky as lightning zig-zagged here and there. The moment he stepped through the front door, though, he was greeted by a worried girlfriend.
“Cullen!” Ellana exclaimed and ran up to him. “You’re home safe!”
He chuckled as her small arms enveloped him in a hug that could probably crush his rib cage if he let it go on for too long.
“It’s not that bad out there, I promise,” he said. “I didn’t slide on the road even once.”
Ellana’s darling face was still buried in his chest so he took great pains to gently extract himself from her death grip and embrace her in turn. This wasn’t how she normally reacted to rainstorms, so he briefly wondered what might have triggered it. For now he would hold her, sharing his body heat.
“I’m just glad you’re back,” she mumbled and finally looked up.
Cullen frowned, immediately recognizing signs of distress on his beloved’s face.
“Is everything alright?” he asked. “Did something happen?”
She shook her head.
“No,” she said, paused, reconsidered, then continued in a smaller voice. “Yes? We’ve had a series of nearby lightning strikes and they rattled the whole house. I hated it.”
A surge of protective feelings filled Cullen’s heart as he pulled Ellana even closer against his body. He hated seeing her scared - no matter how silly it seemed to be afraid of the lightning - so instead of saying anything further he lifted her face to his and placed a soft, gentle kiss on her trembling mouth. He stayed like that for a while, caressing lips against lips, until she no longer clutched at him for comfort. By the time they broke apart, her cheeks were pleasantly flushed and her breath was coming in short, hiccuping bursts.
“Better?” he asked quietly.
Ellana smiled up at him, making his chest grow warm.
“Yes.”
