i completely understand the instinct to be very very defensive of trinity santos & in fact i also have that/really relate to a lot of her character. and i do realize that so much of the vitriol towards her is motivated by misogyny and it’s fair to point that out. i’ve been a trinity girlmom since ep one of season one! i love a mean woman!

however !!!!!

denying valid criticisms about her from people who are talking in good faith is not necessary imo. for instance: she can be unkind which is hurtful to others [even if she doesn’t mean it that way! intentions don’t always confer outcomes]. or that she was being unprofessional in front of a patient. or that she does allow her emotions to dictate a lot of her treatment of patients [even though we understand and empathize with why]. by acknowledging these things about her character, it doesn’t mean she’s a bad person or we hate her!

it actually is recognizing that she’s complicated! by pretending that she doesn’t have any flaws at all or there aren’t things she can work on, that really takes away from her agency/humanity. sometimes the bad things that happen to people make them more jagged or hard to handle! that’s good storytelling!

it’s also like, can you only love a character if you truly believe they are wholly good or faultless? you can only extend compassion to people that you think were wronged or their actions excusable? to me, it’s actually less empathetic to say “i love her she’s absolved of everything” than to say “hey, she’s a complicated character who deserves grace and actually is strong enough to grow/heal for the better of herself and her relationships”. that said though, it does absolutely thrill me to see her be mean and rude and abrasive so whatevs.
