SO, IT'S UNDERTALE'S BIRTHDAY. I DIDN'T FORGET THIS TIME.
Disclaimer: I"m a liar. I actually did completely and totally forget. I only remembered because I kept seeing things on my youtube recommended saying that it was.
So, uh... happy birthdayyy, Undertale... My one and only muse that I have been hopelessly transfixed on for about seven freaking years now.
I would have done something if I remembered. Alas, I did not. So, u h. Jumping on tumblr and making a crap post just to announce to the world that I am, in fact, not dead is my poor attempt at celebrating it. The next time I release a fic/chapter, I will do it in the game's birthday honor, I swear-
Also, u h. Is it true the tumblr au sans sexyman competition is back, 'cus I've been seeing things of that too-
Crazy Rich Asians
This one didn't live up to the expectations that had been created by the positive reviews here and by the movie as well. I felt somewhat disappointed that the book did not capture my attention as well as the movie did. I had watched the movie before I read this book, and at the time I didn't even know that it was based on a book. But I loved the movie so much, and I was so intrigued by it, that I immediately ordered the book.
The book gives us the perspective of different characters, every chapter is from the POV of a character or one of the families. I liked Rachel and Nick's characters, however I couldn't connect to them as much as I did in the movie. However, this could be because of multiple POVs throughout the book. Astrid was a strong character, and the book delves more into her inner battles, which something I liked. However, as much as I loved her, I feel her storyline is much better in the movie, and I hope they stick to it in the sequels as well. I liked the badass Peik Lin in the movie, but I loved the fierce Peik Lin in the book. We see more of her family as well in the book, especially her dad. There is such a plethora of characters that it was sometimes hard to keep track of them while reading.
~Spoilers ahead~
I couldn't help but compare Michael's position and Rachel's position in the story. Michael comes from a fairly middle class family, and falls in love with Astrid Leong, who comes from one of the richest families in Singapore. Parallel to them are Rachel and Nick respectively. Michael's desperate need to get out of his marriage, just so he could get away from the Leongs, makes him go to the extent of faking his own affair. He is a self made man and try as he might, he can't see himself ever fitting into this family. On the other hand there's Rachel, who ultimately accepts Nick and agrees to be with him. I couldn't help but imagine what fate has in store for her when she legally becomes a Young. I feel Kevin Kwan did an excellent job with these two storylines- Michael on the verge of leaving everything behind and Rachel on the verge of entering into this chaotic world, both outsiders, both bound by these crazy rich families. Their juxtaposition is something not as evident in the movie as in the book, which is something I really loved about the book. Reading the book made me understand the need for Astrid's storyline, as opposed to something I just accepted as being there in the movie, no questions asked. Having said that, I still do prefer her storyline in the movie to that in the book, probably because she comes out stronger in the movie.
~Spoilers over~
I did end up enjoying the book, but not as much as I thought I would. I think I understand it more because I had watched the movie already and had some sense of familiarity with this world, that is otherwise completely new to me and if given the choice, I would prefer the movie over the book anyday.
(I don't know if I'm even making any sense at this point, everything seems haywire at the moment but oh well! Had to get this out of my system at some point.)
your writing is so fucking realistic and good like bitch what the fuck
