Caught Hannah Whitten at Chapters bookstore in Dublin talking about her upcoming book Reliquary and snagged an early signed copy (plus a signed copy of For the Wolf which I am currently obsessed with)☺️ She's succesfully convinced me to read horror (more specifically her book because I will not make a commitment to the genre lol)!

It was wonderful listening about her writing process. Hannah spoke about the need to write even when you are feeling uninspired, because that is what leads to ideas and inspiration. This resonated a lot with me in terms of art - when I start creating art, I start getting more and more ideas, my mind becomes more creative. However, in order to get to that place, I need to start first. Honestly, I needed that reminder because I keep taking breaks and then find it hard to get back into painting.

It was great to get a glimpse of Hannah's thought process when creating stories, how she likes challenging herself with different genres, and how her newest book Reliquary came about. She spoke about creating characters that are not always relatable, but have complex layers. Characters like Reliquary's protagonist Claire, who might not always make the best choices, and at times may not be likeable, but would still have readers rooting for her to some degree. Characters and books like these are very intriguing to me, which is the main reason why I will be picking up Reliquary despite not being a fan of the horror genre in general.

One of the reasons why I love Roma so much is because it would've been so easy for him to just be the typical dark-haired, brooding, mean, "hates everyone but her" YA male love interest. But he ISN'T. Roma is so unabashedly full of love for all of the people in his life (including people who aren't his love interest) and that feels SO RARE in books that are coming out now. I love him.

Kaz is the grandma friend - not the stereotypical sweet grandma but the kind that's always in a bad mood, says the most horrendous stuff and you are low key wondering why your parents still talk to her. But then one day your husband cheats on you or something, and the next time you see your grandma she calls you over and very earnestly asks if you want him dead. And you realize, she's not actually evil, she's just very traumatized and has never been to therapy

humans of the internet, I am giving you all permission to put down that book. the one you are reading that everyone else loves? the one that someone swears you'll adore? the one you actively dislike reading?

you can put it down.

there are so many books in the world, you can't love them all. and that's okay. maybe you want to like it, maybe you feel obligated to read it, maybe you think you'll like the end more.

it's okay. walk away from this one. find another you'll love. it's what you deserve.

I think the first step towards the life you want is often to just say yes to more things. Accept that coffee invitation from your coworker even if it seems awkward. Sign up for that free class at the library that you're not sure you'll like. Join that club. Book that tour. Say yes to as many things as you can and kill the part of your brain that gut-reacts with a no.

every time i see this post i think of that person who posted on reddit that they wanted to go to subway for the first time but they were scared they would say the wrong thing so someone gave them step by step instructions for the entire process and what all the choices would be and when they would ask what question and i just think
