there’s something about poland that produces the best horror artwork. can someone tell me
Chapter 36! The colour version of this is missing the little feather to say “Chapitre 36: Lonely Eyes” but also look at how pretty it is in colour. This is gorgeous.
But it’s also Fai, so I have no idea how to interpret it. I don’t know enough about to homeworld to safely assume that this is Celes, but maybe it is? We’ve had this splash page for Fai just recently, which also featured him staring at snow in a potentially similar setting, so maybe? If not, then it’s just a random world they visit, so I’m going with the wishful thinking and pretending that this is definitely Celes. Which is interesting enough in itself because the only proper glimpse of his country I’ve even had is this, and that was vague enough that I never really considered how modern Fai’s world might be in other places. But here he is on top of a clock tower staring out at a city with an internal lighting system, so it’s moving further and further away from my first impression of it. But it IS snowing, and dressing warm is the only other hint I even HAVE of what Celes is like, so I’m going to run with it.
Of course, because this is FAI, he can’t possibly be sitting there like a normal person because he doesn’t know how to do that. Cultural differences and all. But that aside, it’s one of the more peaceful glimpses of Fai that we’ve had so far. Before it was all about restrictions and metaphorical entrapment, but now it’s just happily staring off into the distance. I’m not sure if he’s enjoying it so much because he doesn’t usually get to do that, or if he knows he won’t be able to do it for long, but either way he seems to be having a genuinely good time.
And then in the backdrop we have the massive stone wing of the angel statue, and it’s such a nice image that could potentially mean so many things. In Hanshin he had the element of Air associated with him, not to mention the ability to fly (which he was great at), so it could very easily be that. Then again, wings are usually Sakura’s thing, so it could also be the heavy implication of what’s lying ahead of him. Then again wings can also be representative of freedom, and Fai is the only one in the main cast who is running away from something, so that could be a part of it too. In that case it would be ironic that the wings are made of stone, and immovable, as there’s no way he will escape this thing forever. Whatever it actually is.
You could also make the point that sitting in the place of one of those statues, effectively taking its place. But is that the denial of his freedom or a sense of obligation? Does he have a role in “looking after” Celes, in the same way that the angel seems to be? More than that, is he successful in this? Or are the dead bodies we saw in Chapter 2 a symptom of his failure to keep it all safe?
