eveyry time someone says kerdly is yaoi or krusie is yuri or kriselle is yuri a dog dies . btw. and fhe dog is kris dreemurr. have u ever thouhgt about that
Ok, so I’ve been thinking, in regards to this post, on non queer actors playing queer characters. And specifically, about non-trans actors playing any variation of identity under the trans umbrella. And you know what? I found, in some cases, it doesn’t really matter.
And so, here is my thought process:
There’s a difference between a character who wasn’t introduced as queer until later in the show. Does that mean their current actor should be replaced?
Also:
Isn’t the entire point of acting to act like another person? I personally believe that if the actor genuinely cares and educates themselves, they should be able to play said character.
I also had another thought: what about genderfluid characters? More specifically, genderfluid shapeshifters(no, not all shapeshifters are genderfluid. Pretty sure there’s a post somewhere about that too). Think about say, in the case of Loki. Loki, in the comics, is portrayed as genderfluid in the Agent of Asgard run and the newer run(which I can’t remember the name of for the life of me). Loki is shown to shift themself into whatever gender they’re feeling. Now, in the case of this actually being portrayed(we don’t talk about the series. Wtf was that. It didn’t even show anything but a flash of a paper with sex-fluid which is more about Loki being a shapeshifter) should the actor be genderfluid? After all, for about 2011-2013, we were given a positively fantastic portrayal of Loki by Tom Hiddleston. And for genderfluid shapeshifters, the usual consensus is that they would completely change their bodies to what is considered male or female at birth, so should Loki be played by cis actors or trans actors, or would it really matter? Also, as a genderfluid person, there is no monolith of being genderfluid. Some genderfluid people experience gender dysphoria. Some don’t. Some change their names when the shift genders. Others don’t. Some will change their clothing to match whatever gender they’re feeling. Some don’t. And another big thing: we don’t actually know for sure whether or not someone identifies as trans unless they tell you. Some people aren’t ready to come out of the closet yet. Some might not be ready for the backlash they may receive. But either way, you can’t really tell just by looking at someone whether or not they’re trans.
Now, that isn’t to say queer actors shouldn’t play queer characters, of course they should be allowed to. But they shouldn’t be limited to those roles. And that’s the problem, with writing and typecasting. If an actor is openly queer, directors and producers will consider them for a queer role. Fantastic! But it runs the risk of it delving into where they’re only considered for those roles. And then, there are producers/casting directors who will only cast queer actors, not based on talent, but on their sexuality or gender identity. This is the real problem. It’s not that queer actors should only play queer actors or cishet actors should never play queer roles, it’s that there should be a balance. There should be equal opportunities for all actors. But the fact is, there isn’t.
there’s something beautiful and heartbreaking about watching your younger sibling thrive as someone you would never have been allowed to be.
they could have the most gorgeous curves youve seen
if theyre nonbinary, theyre nonbinary
have the prettiest makeup, the loveliest nails
if theyre nonbinary, theyre nonbinary
they could have a beard and that parental energy
if theyre nonbinary theyre nonbinary
look right at home in flannel and baggy jeans
if theyre nonbinary, theyre nonbinsry
she could use she preferentially
or he could be fonder of he
and both of them, still be non binary
the thing that defines someone as enby
is when someone says hey, that's me
not the original anon but i want to argue in good faith with you
it seems we have differing views of what the words "yaoi" and "yuri" mean, and that's fine. you think yuri means femslash only, i think yuri means any lesbian relationship, and that's ok.
whether the non-binary person is ok with their relationships being labeled yaoi or yuri is, ultimately, up to the non-binary person themself. for example, as a gay non-binary person, i am ok with a relationship i am in being called "yaoi", while there may be another gay non-binary person who isn't ok with their relationship being called "yaoi". these are both fine positions to hold and are equally valid.
however, kris isn't real. we can't go and ask them "hey are you ok with your relationships being called yaoi/yuri" because they aren't real. you aren't hurting their feelings by calling their relationship yaoi/yuri because they are not real. by insinuating that a non-binary person cannot be in a relationship which they themself deem to be "yaoi" or "yuri", you are actively undermining my real, lived experience. there is also no harm being caused to kris' feelings because, once again, they are not real.
i feel like that last point ("there is no harm being caused to kris' feelings because they are not real") is a point ppl use to excuse he/him or she/her kris so i feel like that's not very good and i will continue to argue that kris ships arent yaoi or yuri.
but ☝️ your other points are in fact very good
and i hope you have a yaoiful day and that other gay nonbinary people's days are an amount of yaoiful equating to how comfortable they are with the term
(same with the lesbian nonbinary people and how yuriful their days are)
saying this as a nonbinary lesbian but you Can call relationships with a nonbinary person gay/lesbian/etc. that's how it works i fear. like by definition those ships are yuri / yaoi because they Definitely aren't heterosexual
by definition no they are not because kris is nonbinary and therefore not male (boy) or female (girl)
not saying you can't be a nonbinary lesbian, that's swag as hell, identify however you want, but yaoi and yuri have pretty clear definitions
edit: everyone go see my newer post tl;dr is i still think kris ships aren't yaoi or yuri but☝️you can call nonbinary relationships yaoi and/or yuri if the nonbinary person(s) is okay with it
