my thoughts on ch1 after spending all morning playing it
obviously spoilers under cut
first of all. my bingo card so far:
pink means it happened, question mark means it kinda happened, greyed out means it's no longer possible due to game events
cecirook is giving more toxic to me rn. i do wonder how the ending would've played out if rook had stood up for herself instead of wasting a round on just her and cecilia. like vega said, no matter what, someone is dying-- but u can't help but wonder if at least sailor could have been saved.
i'm ruling out the cd reveal for now, but that note at the end definitely tipped me off that the bartender is 100% her (as if we all didn't already know LMAO). i haven't looked at it too hard so i couldn't tell you what it means if i tried but i'm sure a better theorist than me will come up with something eventually.
not actually plot relevant but i have chronic cold front brain and when this shit happened i gasped so loud bc it reminded me of winnie
i lowkey wish we would've gotten to see more interviews but at the same time... we got to actually have a conversation with benny so that was nice. I have yet to watch benny's reaction to any other group of people bc the playthrough i watched only focused on the vick route, but i found it very interesting the difference between how benny and bones talk about each other. you can kinda see by my bingo card that based only on what bones said i initially had the thought that benny would distance himself if he found out eddie was working with bones (which, considering the whole vick route made it out alive and eddie just pulled some evil shit in order to keep his head, i'm not entirely ruling out), but he doesn't actually seem to care (at the moment) that eddie is aligned with them. whether that says something more about bones' character or just the fact that benny very clearly wants him dead is kinda up in the air right now.
i am VERY interested to see how alliances change going forward. elise, vega, and maneki have been singled out by the group as "undeserving" of their place in the game for letting their partners die, but we also know that elise and maneki (and possibly vega, considering the events of round 4) have the favor of the audience (though whether that will actually help them is. debatable). i can't help but point out that full and unbreakable loyalty has yet to actually help anyone so far-- rook 100% realized she wasted a round on cecilia and both sailor and sandbag ended up dead in the end. maybe elise was on to something, maybe breaking your alliances is necessary at times.
i really don't think this singling out will affect elise that much since that whole group is still alive and well, and vick seems to have a place in whatever plan he's cooking for all of them. the real question there right now is if eddie stays with the group, which seems to be up to the player at this point. i can't doubt that there's a possibility that elise will drop them all under pressure, especially since he's being more upfront about the fact that he's willing to. the vick route is seeming extremely unstable at the moment imo ESPECIALLY after those outbursts during blackjack.
poppy and cobyn were VERY quick to step out of their alliance with vega when she was put on the spot by eddie. they never showed any loyalty to them in the first place, but to see them so casually turn away from someone they've already gained so much information from was a bit jarring. at the moment i'm pretty confident that someone in that group will be next (or soon) to go, and it'll be interesting to see how everything splinters off from there.
i genuinely have no idea what any of this means for maneki tbh (quite the enigma ahahahaha). the only thing keeping them tethered to rook was sailor, and now that he's gone i have a slight feeling cecilia isn't going to take very kindly to maneki continuing to follow them around (more on cecilia later because our maiden is definitely heartless). not that maneki was super loyal to that group anyways, i'm pretty sure they definitely had enough chips to pay for that med kit the first time. they're playing safe, they're playing sneaky, and they're mostly playing alone (but hey, i applaud them for using the wild card to the group's advantage unlike SOME PEOPLE)-- i'm pretty sure they've already started to come into their role as the new underdog of the group (too early? my bad)
second only to benny (well... maybe they're tied) i'm pretty confident that eddie's closest ally in the game is going to be poppy UNLESS. you play vick route. i don't have too much specific to say on that right now, it's kinda just vibes, but the fact that you MUST defend poppy in her lie to vick in order to survive at ALL??? yes ok choose between your daughter and some old fuck

speaking of vick i didnt trust him before but i definitely don't trust him now. he's too overconfident and reliant on strategies that worked when he was running the show (which. hey has probably been a while. i'm sure they've already started changing shit because you're a player now dumbass) and honestly it's probably in everyone's best interests to take what he says with the lightest dusting of salt-- which will be easy considering his closest allies aren't even really loyal to him.
hey so. cecilia. looking back i can absolutely see what just happened coming but at the time i really didn't think she could be so goddamn manipulative. we know rook likes her off screen, we've seen them interact before. obviously she's gonna keep that up for the cameras, for her role. is that what cecilia told her to make her throw away a hit? or was she scared of having issues with cecilia herself? are they gonna remain a secluded little pair the whole game, or are they gonna branch out to everyone else? how's their relationship now that they're off stage again? i have so many questions and literally zero answers
i have a feeling eddie being a statistician is going to give him an almost unfair advantage going forward. he's playing with a bunch of gamblers who aren't too keen on actually calculating their odds of winning, so him being able to do quick math like that will probably help him play it safe as possible when the time is right. HOWEVER. as we saw in one of the round 4 endings, sometimes those risks and sacrifices are worth taking, and that toss-up risk was what let sailor and sandbag live just that once.
i knew from the moment they came on screen that sailor and sandbag would be the ones to die first-- in fact, i think a lot of us did. i was kind of afraid that it would turn out to be like a cop out death because we were all expecting it but NO im sorry i ever doubted you rach and rix that was SUCH a good death scene. and the fact that there are different combinations of endings you can get in round four depending on how you play and who you trust.... oh it's so good. though definitely a wrong decision going forward, playing the sailor route leading up to part two is so very worth it if you wanna feel like the worst person ever for betraying your captain and first mate.
all in all, the full chapter one of jcc was EXCELLENT. i still have yet to play every ending and free roll event, but from what ive seen they're all wonderful. i can't wait for chapters two and three and i ESPECIALLY can't wait for more beddie content. that's what we're all really here for, right?
