PSA: be incredibly self-aware when you watch documentaries and listen to the language used.
I was sitting there halfassedly watching a documentary on the Nazi economy while drawing—I already have read quite a bit about the subject but sometimes I learn new things—when it occurred to me that the way they were speaking about these issues was…suspect. The language was specific and not lining up properly
For instance, I’m sitting there listening to a description of shell companies and bonds in scrip but they never used the words—they refused to use words associated with capitalist practices when describing the acts of Nazis or their collaborators, instead choosing to go on a roundabout ramble to describe it, and in the middle of a documentary ostensibly about the economic practices of Nazi Germany, segued into a discussion of art stealing (but called it spoliation—which is not usually used outside of legal terminology, and is often used more by the educated in some way)
In short this was an attempt to rewrite history; its real meaning was to push the idea the Nazis were socialist (yeah see no, it’s called marketing, Hitler straight up said they used red flags to confuse people who meant to show up to a communist meeting), wink-wink in near tacit approval of their views on might making right, and just generally try to cast the left as the “real” Nazis
Pay attention when you watch things. The words people use to describe things matter and they color your understanding if you aren’t savvy enough to look past it
