First Day of Class
“Do I have to?” he asks his mom as they approach the recently remodeled building with the new school inside it.
“Yes, you were having difficulties and I don’t want you to end up in one of the boarding houses,” she replies, wrapping an arm around his shoulder and tugging him against her side for a moment.
He glances at the sidewalk, face heating up as he remembers all the times that his teacher told him he was too slow and not bright enough. He’s not sure how this new school will be different.
“It’ll be fine,” she promises him, “You’ll make friends, you’ll learn, you’ll be close to home for if there is a problem.”
He nods, stopping to stare at the massive red brick building with huge colorful windows. “How am I going to know where to go?”
“We’re supposed to hand the letter to the guard at the door, and the guard will have us shown to the school area,” she replies, nudging him to keep walking.
He nods again, slowly stepping forward, almost dragging his feet.
When they get to the door, he wants to bolt. He hadn’t expected to see so many people. What exactly is this building besides a school? He doesn’t pay attention to what his mom says as she speaks with a muscular woman by the door. He’s too busy staring at all the people. He doesn’t think he’s seen so many colors and shapes and varieties in one place before. He didn’t even know people came in some of them. Then there is the clothing that they are wearing. While some are familiar, there are a lot that are not and just adds to it. Despite the fact there are so many adults with so much talking going on, it doesn’t seem to be as loud as he expected.
“Benya,” his mom states, catching his attention and smiling at him when he looks at her, “Come along, this nice woman is showing us to the classroom.”
“Individual,” the muscular woman corrects, “I’m not a woman. You may call me Isa.”
He blinks, processing that statement. “You’re not a man?”
Smiling at him, Isa nods, “That’s correct. I’m not a man.”
“Not she or he?” he asks, slightly confused.
“They.” The guard answers, stopping by a door and motioning to it, “This is your classroom.”
He’s about to ask about ‘they’ but his mom remarks, “Thank you so much, Isa.”
“Have a good day,” Isa replies, turning and heading back into the crowd.
“I didn’t get to ask about ‘they’,” he grumbles, watching the guard’s retreating back.
Shaking her head, his mom gently pushes him towards the door, “Lets go in and meet the teacher.”
Dragging his feet, he steps inside the door, looking around as he does so. The first thing he realizes is there isn’t just one teacher, there seems to be several. The second thing he realizes is this classroom looks more like a library than a classroom, and the third thing he realizes is there are other kids already here.
Maybe this will be better, he thinks, it’s already different.
Boops Isa
Thanks anon! There is a few different Isa’s so here they are:
Isa Quari - they would narrow their eyes at you, wondering if that was supposed to be an attack or if you are playing. Social games of the more playful nature are not their strong point, part of why they are a guard.
Isa the Moon Guardian - wonders why you would boop a computer, then carefully form a digital image on the nearest screen of a hand lightly tapping at the glass as if to boop you back.
bloop
Thanks for the bloop!
Isa’s agender with days where they lean more towards the masculine, feminine, and androgynous for presentation and feelings.
