Juneteenth. See when people ask me “where I am from” I love to answer: From the United States by way of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Slightly bratty I know. But it’s the truth. It often throws them a bit off guard whatever the color of the inquiring person’s skin. I have longed my whole life to know my heritage beyond slavery, beyond the life that I have lived this far, beyond what my family can tell me, when the census paper trail stops. On my many trips to the Motherland’s countries, I have looked for family ressemblance in faces. Everywhere I go in this world there is always of person of direct African decent who tells me « You look like you are from X - insert any sub-saharan country on the African continent or any island of the Caribbean. No one ever directly says: “American.” For a very long time I felt not “black enough”. I envied people around when they would talk about the tribe they are from or conversations about which part of the Island or that moment when people realize they know some person in common thanks to the family lineage and place/tribe/island that they are from. I have never had that. Music is my tribe that gave me a sense of community. I am a woman, that gives me a sense of belonging. And when I travel the world I am awareness of my “blackness” in predominantly white spaces. I love my black skin. My heritage lays within the past, the story of human survival, but what am I made of? As of 2020 here is the science estimate: 34% Nigeria 18% Cameroon, Congo & Southern Bantu Peoples 18% England, Wales & Northwestern Europe 9% Mali 5% Senegal 5% Norway 5% Ireland & Scotland 3% Benin 1% Greece 1% Ghana 1% Germanic Europe 1% Northern Africa But I will never know “where I come from”. That was forever taken from me. I come from the earth and dust of stars and I will return to the earth and the sky at some point.
