Is it wrong for Iran to want to have nuclear weapons? Israel has them - why don't they need to denuclearise if we talk about peace?

Anon is saying: Israel has them, therefore it's unfair to deny the Iranian regime the nuclear weapons it seeks.

The fairness argument sounds intuitive until you ask what 'fair' actually means in a world where states have different intentions, different records, and different legal obligations

In geopolitics, morality isn't about ensuring everyone has the same toys. It's about harm reduction.

If you apply a consistent moral principle like "it is wrong for a state to explicitly call for the mass murder of another people," the deceptively simplistic fairness assertion falls apart.

Iran's regime hangs protesters from cranes, murders ~40,000 of its citizens in a couple days, and routinely calls for genocide of another people...which makes it awkward to argue they should have the most destructive weapons in human history bEcAuSe FaIrNeSs.

This isn't a rational argument, let alone a moral one.

Which of these is not like the others?

The US's nuclear deterrence threat: "Don't attack us with nukes or we'll take you with us"

France's/UK's nuclear deterrence threat: "Don't attack us with nukes or we'll take you with us."

Israel's nuclear deterrence intent: "Don't wipe us out, or we'll take you with us"

The Iranian regime's explicit, publicly-stated intent for their weapons: "Death to Israel".

The Islamic Republic has made "Death to Israel" and the destruction of the Jewish state a core pillar of its identity for nearly 50 years. It funds proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas on the basis of this shared, explicitly genocidal goal.

When a regime that regularly executes its own citizens for protesting and that calls for the erasure of another country wants nukes, the world sees a high-risk actor shaped by an apocalyptic theological faction whose doctrine holds that engineering chaos accelerates the return of the Mahdi. It's an actual operational framework that treats civilizational catastrophe as a goal.

No country officially supports Iran acquiring a bomb. No sane leader even approves of the idea in private.

Since antizionists are fond of citing internal law they haven't read, let's look at the legal angle:

Iran is a signatory to the NPT. By signing it, they legally committed to never developing nuclear weapons in exchange for access to peaceful nuclear technology. When the regime pursues a bomb, it isn't just making a weapon, it's also breaking a legal contract it chose to sign - and it has already violated the NPT repeatedly.

Israel did not sign on to the NPT and is not, therefore, bound by it.

The "fairness" framing of the Ask also ignores how Israel actually holds its weapons.

Israel has never officially admitted to having nukes - it has conducted no nuclear tests and made no announcements in a policy called amimut (opacity). The purpose of amimut is to prevent a regional arms race. A confirmed arsenal might force every neighbor to seek to match it, but an unconfirmed one deters without triggering an arms race.

Iran, by contrast, has been openly enriching uranium toward weapons-grade while chanting "Death to Israel" at state functions.

Anon's framing falsely assumes the only relevant variable is who has the weapon.

In reality, the relevant variables are (1) who holds it, (2) what they've said they'll do with it, (3) what legal obligations they've accepted, and (4) what their actual record of behavior looks like.

By every one of those measures, Israel and Iran are not comparable cases.

Pretending they're comparable and calling it a matter of fairness isn't an attempt at moral consistency - it's selective framing meant to conceal the overtly malign and dangerous intent of the regime in Iran.

Not like I'm gonna come back here and be active anytime soon like I was before, especially since I've been largely educating non-Iranians on Threads, but god fucking damn it. I already see mutuals posting bullshit propaganda about "no war" with Iran despite the fact that Iranians have been BEGGING for foreign aid and protesting regularly for it for YEARS now. You see all these white performative activists saying "Hands off Iran" and not knowing about the 30k Iranians who died in TWO DAYS this January (the 8th and 9th) from the Islamic Republic's brutalities. The same people that didn't fucking speak up until February 28th (when the intervention started) of 2026 and completely ignored all the atrocities that have been committed since 1979. Even more so, they turned a blind eye to the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in 2022 when Mahsa Amini was brutally killed and it sparked another revolution in Iran. The people who didn't speak up until now don't actually care about Iranians. They care about an agenda. And don't get me wrong, I fucking hate Trump and the Israeli government too, but I also stand with the 90 million Iranians inside Iran who have begged for support, and the 7 million Iranians who live in the diaspora. What happened this January is a GENOCIDE.

My partner (who I am in a common law marriage with) of 5 years is an Iranian man. He lived under the Islamic Regime for 24 years of his life. He knows the brutalities, he knows how they will imprison, torture, SA, and execute innocent Iranians in the prison system. Even now, as America and Israel intervenes in Iran, the IRGC are using prisoners as human shields, as well as innocent school children (even though most Iranian households are quarantining in their homes and in bomb shelters atm). My partner's family and friends are still inside Tehran/Karaj, and we talk to them as often as we can (when there aren't internet blackouts like the ones you see now), and they themselves, as well as so many Iranians, are grateful that they are receiving foreign aid. Yes, they're stressed. Yes, there's bombs going towards nuclear and military centers as well as some oil fields, and yes there is acid rain happening. They know this. Yes, they know that the USA and Israel don't have good intentions, and they know they probably want a business deal out of this. Absolutely. Iranians know this, and they want Reza Pahlavi to come back so he can be the bridge for a secular democracy in Iran. He has a 100 day plan for after Iran is liberated, and he himself has said time and time again (even in English) that he does NOT want to be king. If Reza Pahlavi comes back, he will be the closest thing to a democratically elected leader that Iran has ever had (they had monarchies in the past). Iranians want him, and they want their country. Please, listen to them.

I don't know who is listening here, but PLEASE stop spreading the regime's propaganda. The Islamic Republic of Iran had foreign aid from Russian communists in 1979 when they first installed the Ayatollas, and since then they've had a booming relationship with Iran, including their war against Ukraine. The IRGC itself funds so many terrorist groups, including Hamas, Houthis, and Hezbollah. Iran is in an economic crisis not just due to sanctions (which I never think work) but also due to the fact that the IRGC spends Iranian funds on war and terrorism. It never goes to the people. And Iranians have tried for DECADES to liberate themselves from the Islamic Republic's tyranny.

I want a Free Iran. I want a Free Palestine (which can only come out of a Free Iran). Iranians deserve to have their country back. They deserve support, and they deserve the Islamic Republic to be removed so they can finally start to heal. If you are non-Iranian and don't know any Iranians in your life, please stop pretending that you know better than Iranian people. As us non-Iranians it is our job to LISTEN to them. 90% of Iranians want this intervention. They have been protesting for it, and even the diaspora continues to protest in support of it every Sunday.

Please stand with Iranian PEOPLE. Not the Islamic Regime.
