These are collared and well-fed, but also apparently unspayed and reproductive, and thus owners are probably contributing to Puerto Rico’s stray dog (“satos”) problem, which is reported to be approximately 250,000. The other big contributor is residents dumping their fertile dogs on beaches before leaving the island for mainland United States (10% of population has bailed on island in last decade). Puerto Rico really, really needs to better encourage/induce residents to spay and neuter every single pet. OK, now just a fun fact: Juan Ponce de León (the explorer buried in the church) supposedly had a dog named Becer®illo … some sort of Castilian mastiff (Grand Mastin de Borinquen) that is now a recognized breed called the Puerto Rican mastiff. Less fun fact: Ponce and dog killed by arrow laced with manchineel (“little apple of death”; Euphorbiaceae). But both probably deserved it.
