I grew up as the ugly duckling... the ugly dark one, that didn't belong. Kids were mean, they called me potty face, poxy girl, hairy scary.. adults were just as cruel, "why she look so different than the other... what happen to her face... she so hairy.." They pulled at my clothes, they scrutinised me and my skin, my face... it was like being in a circus as the main act. Thankfully my sisters never saw the difference in the contrast of our skin tones... my long golden brown non curly hair... instead they just saw me... their big sister who they were most protective of, as I was of them. I remember my sister Dion getting into many fights on the playground defending me and protecting me from bullies. Being called the ugly duckling did a number on my self esteem. The thing though about the ugly duckling story is that in discovering your true self, having overcome and conquered many tribulations... you somehow find peace when you realize you're really a swan in a pond of ducks. Each of us have something special within us, but we must dig deep.
