I love Lagavulin, but I've found that a lot of bars don't carry it. Can you recommend another scotch that's comparable? I've had Glenlivet and J.W but they don't have the wonderful big, peaty, smokiness that I enjoy from Lagavulin.
Well Lagavulin is an Islay so to match the smokiness and peat, you’ll want to go with another Islay single malt. One of the most palatable Islay scotches is Bowmore and I find most bars carry at least the 12 year version of it.
It’s smoother than most of it’s contemporaries, I don’t think I’ve ever had a blended Islay whiskey though and Johnnie Walker wouldn’t even come close.
I lied, I’ve actually had a blended Islay scotch, Big Peat. From what I remember it was heavy on the smoke and peat but didn’t impress outside of that. There’s one I’ve been meaning to check out though, Peat Monster. So far no bar I’ve been to here carries it so I may have to suck it up and plop down the $75 for an adventure.
